I use this straightener for pony hair, though it's a hand-me-down from my mother so it's probably a bit old/outdated.

What helped in learning how to use it to fix pony hair is watching some tutorials of people doing it on YouTube!

What I do is turn the straightener on, put the dial on the lowest setting (1, in the case of this straightener), and let it heat up.

I brush the pony's hair out to the best of my ability before I work on it. Then I wet the pony's hair and wring out excess water so that it's just damp and not dripping before I run it through the straightener a few times. Even with the hair just damp the straightener might make sizzling noises as remaining water is pushed through to the hair ends and makes contact with the heat, this is nothing to be worried about but don't let it drip onto you. Then I brush, straighten, and repeat. I will say that I actually use a plastic comb rather than a metal one or a hair brush, but I'm sure what others use varies.

I've never had a problem with accidentally melting pony hair before, but even on the lowest setting the clamps of the straightener will be quite hot! Don't touch them. The only time I've really worried about possible melting is with fakie hair, which is much lower in quality.

Another thing I'd watch is potential contact of the hot straightener with the plastic or paint of the pony.
