Never customised before - silver paint and modpodge?

Hi All,

I wish to paint the stars on Milky Way with a silver paint but a metallic one not a glittery one. I also wish to protect it with a matt coat and that does not stick.

Does anyone knows which paint i could buy and which over coat please to protect the paint?

Im not sure on the paint, I only know that silver paint is very thin so it might need a base coat of white. Mod podge is a great sealent. Just water it down a bit to prevent stickyness. Also use multiple layers of it.

I've heard this as well. There are a few paint sealants/protectants that should be in the same area as the paint in your craft store, I would just choose one of those.

Any silver acrylic that suits your fancy should be fine, just be sure to use a few thin coats instead of blobbing it on all at once.

Classic yellow-bottle Mod Podge is basically PVA glue, so that's probably not ideal when trying to avoid stickiness, but there are many other formulations these days under the Mod Podge brand which might be better idk. I would personally advise something like Liquitex acrylic varnish that's specifically made for the purpose of sealing. And a non-matte coat might be better if you're going for shiny metallic stars. A mattifying sealant could make them look just grey.

You can combine two things for that - get some silver pigments that you can use in any sealer and work directly with it. I use the Jacquard Pearl Ex - Powdered Mica/Metallic Pigments and combine them with the Americana DuraClear Matte or Gloss sealant (it's a PU sealant and doesn't get glueish over time)

I think it depends on climate. ALL my customs that were ever sealed with Mod Podge are a sticky, icky mess of dust and cat hair. But I live in a tropically humid place. Over the years, I started to prefer totally unsealed customs. Those I've no issues with.

I think it can even vary down to the house

My friend lives three miles away from me, yet her customs that had modpodge on them went sticky, yet mine are ok. Her house is older than mine and does have a damp feeling to it

I moved away from modpodge after that!

I also would recommend a polymer varnish, I personally prefer Golden, but Liquitex works too. And because they’re acrylics you can water them down to do thinner coats to avoid heavy brushstrokes.
 
Also for metallics to get them to really shine it’s good to do the whole base in matte varnish and then go over the metallic spots in a gloss (and also eyes or anything else you want to accent.

EDIT: also liquitex or golden both have good silver paint, and the pearlex powder works too, but nothing beats the shine of using metallic foil

My favorite sealent is Testors Dulcote; easy to find at JoAnn Fabrics, Michael's, or even Hobby Lobby. It does give a matte finish though, so if I do metallics, I usually seal underneath and not seal the final coats of metallic paint. It seems to do just fine this way.
