Art critiques wanted

Hello! I'm starting to fixate on Toy Story and I would like some critiques on how these sketches and drawings of her are, I know there's room for improvement but I can't see anything myself.

Any help is appreciated!

I’m really no good with anatomy type stuff, but I honestly think she looks really good! I love the face portrait that you shaded, you did a good job of making her look like a toy there! I’d definitely be interested in some of her background story too!

:0! AA Thank you! I did reference Jessie and screenshots several times while drawing her head shot! And for a brief summary of who she is, she's an unused character for Woody's Roundup. A prototype was designed and made but nothing more came of it, so the worker who took them home allowed his daughter to play with her.

She ended getting a Woody doll and they had a romantic relationship as they were played with but as the daughter got older, they ended up in a legit romantic relationship but they were separated near the end of the shows run.

She then ended up in an attic all by her lonesome for many years before an older sister put all of her daughters toys in the attic so she had friends. Years go by and it's unfortunately time to sell off the shows materials, so she's left at some place (antique or museum, idk as of yet) and has to return home to her friends, where she bumps into Bo Peep and co.

I also think these look great, I'm honestly struggling to come up with ideas for improvement! I'm particularly impressed by the lower body, the shape of her thighs and calves. Maybe you could add even more dimension (in the first pic) by emphasising her knees more? Idk, perhaps a crease or two might do the trick?

I like her face better in the headshot, her cute nose especially! And the highlighted cheekbones Other than that, all I can say is keep up the good work!

Hi!  I agree, these are quite good. She really embodies the toy story style, it's very cute! Her expression is cute too. I especially like the way you went for all the little reference details in your other sketch. And this one-very nice job on the shirt and her upper torso in general.

I did spot a couple places that you might want to note for next time though. Just so you know--I tend to ramble a LOT, and I like answering questions, so please don't feel picked on if this runs long, it's just me being a motor mouth. Now let's if I remember how to image, lol.

So yeah. The circled bits are the things I spotted, but they could be reference issues, too. But it never hurts to learn to look at your references critically too!

First off: Psst.. You missed some of the lines in her hair. Moving on! (Because nobody here has ever done that a time or twenty!Lol. Except me. I have. I do that.  )

For her face, take a good look at what's going on with her jawline and the ear.  You have the jawline disappearing behind her ear.
If you feel your own face, you can see the jaw basically connects to the ear. In fact, if you look at some other examples of cartoon/comic art, you'll notice sometimes the ear line can just drop down to carry on as the jaw. If it's frustrating, you could just pull the hair forward a tad and avoid the issue. I do that a lot.

For her eye, note where her iris and pupil are in relation to the curve of her face. The lashes can stick out of course, but having the eyeball itself floating in space, bulging, or not wrapping to the curve correctly can head into uncanny valley real quick. The trick here is to practice until you get a feel for how you want to squish, shrink, warp, or cut the shape to get the fit on that second eye. Don't be afraid to get weird with it.
 (You should see my sketchbooks of horrors, lol. So many terrible faces.)

Her torso: This one is more a matter of taste really.  She's a doll, so her proportions don't need to be human, but to me her pelvic area seems a bit short. (Again, ymmv.) The outer silhouette looks good, but I think that horizontal line is just a bit too high.  If you stretched the zipper and moved that line down a tad, while still keeping it inside the jeans shape you've drawn, I think it would fit a bit better with the angle of the legs. But eh, you do you.


The curve of her leg is a little hinky, considering the angle we're seeing it from. If one is turned out at what looks like nearly a 90 degree angle, then it makes perfect sense that we can see the curve of her calf and a straighter line down the front of her leg. But since the other leg is basically straight-on (judging from the foot's position), we shouldn't be getting the quite the same profile view for the knee. 

Oh, and her left foot looks a bit small, when compared to the other one.

The shape and scale of the forward facing foot is really great, BTW. Bang on.  Kudos! I never get that angle right.

Sooo... yeah, as usual this is ramble city. Hopefully  there's something a bit useful in the deluge.  I'd really like to see some more of your art! Your style is very classic Disney cartoon, I love it. Reminds me a little bit of Kim Possible.
