On the other hand, size doesn't make a community or a convention.

Decidedly not. Bigger ≠ better, but there's a relationship to profit, or at least breaking even.

That said, it's not uncommon in the current day and age for fandoms to be like that. It happens with anime series, it happens with other shows and things. It's more of a 'now' generation than a 'past stuff' generation and I suppose if fans move on to a new medium there's not really a place for that.

Now, I won't be around to see it unless I end up as a Futurama-like head in a jar, but I've got an inkling that some of the folk who fell in (and later out) of love with G4 will be back. One day there will be a revival, or they'll see something at a sale or on TV (or what passes for it in the future), and it will all come rolling back. I hope there's a solid multigenerational fandom waiting for them, and with a bit of age, or dare I say wisdom, they'll drop some of their prejudices. If not, what was the loss?

I really hope you are right about the hardcore people, but I remain healthily sceptical.

Can't fault you there!

PS - I am not a Pollyanna, honest. One of the things I've got out of pony is hope for a better future, and I'll be damned if my intrinsic personality is gonna screw that up!

Depending on your definition of “Pollyanna” in slang (there are a few ways to take it), I’d rather be a Pollyanna any day than one of the sad legions of whiners and pessimists that plague the internet. XD Society could use a good dose of Pollyanna-ism, as far as I’m concerned. For example... the current climate of the Star Wars community. :P I’d waaay rather be irrepressibly positive and cheerful about my fandom than spend my every waking moment stressed out about it and tearing down every little aspect I don’t like!

This is also a good point :)

And I don't think it's a bad thing to have hope or faith in your fandom.

G4 isn't my fandom, so I don't really have a bigger wish for its future in terms of its separation from wider MLP stuff. But I do genuinely hope for a time when there's no separation - at least, people can collect or like what they want, but the whole hostility is gone. That's my hope as a PONY fan.

But I do really want the bronyesque terms to vanish from pony collecting. Things like cutie mark which only applies to G3 and G4 really annoy me when applied to G1, and the word brony has negative connitations. Plus I hate being called one, having always been part of a fandom that existed back in the middle 90s. Back then we were ponypeople. I stick with that.

So yeah. If we can lose the "G4 is the evolution of everything before it" videos on youtube and the G4-centric vocabulary for older gens, and the wider barriers come down, great.

But I think a lot of people experienced the other side of the bronydom and it's hard to shake that image I suppose as well.

I also think there will be a later G4 revival. We are already seeing it in the last few years with G3. But I think it will more be the kids of G4 that spearhead it, rather than necessarily the adult bronies of now who aren't in it for the long haul. I think as an adult fan you either stick with it or you pass through. As a kid you can leave things behind and then come back to them when you're older. I expect it for Monster High and for FIM in the future.

For the record I love that we now have a healthy number of specialised G3 collectors who grew up with G3 here as well. This community is old - maybe it won't be that long before we have the same happening for G4. I mean, it has been going almost 10 years now...

I don't think you need a time machine. I'm 37 now and I got back into pony collecting early - I never totally left it I suppose for more than a year as a kid - but I didn't get online till I was 15 or 16. At that time there were a lot of people who had 'outgrown' MLP and then come back to it in their late teens and early 20s. Even though it wasn't socially cool then. The same thing is happening with G3 in about the same age band I think. For the kids of G4 to do the same, it isn't unrealistic to think it could happen in the next five to ten years.

Of course, the future of MLP and what the community is then is another matter.

This, this, THIS!

When G4 came along, I was like “Oh, cool! They’re making another MLP series!”. That’s all it was to me, and that’s still all it is to me. I have enjoyed it very much: as a series, a toyline, and a franchise... much like I have enjoyed all of the previous MLP generations. The reception G4 has received from a broader fanbase, the brony phenomenon, the conventions, and all of the general buzz surrounding G4 in particular... is a blip on the radar to me. I love MLP—all of it. I have loved it for as long as I can remember, and I continue to love it and get excited about new series and toys. I’m glad that G4 was so popular, and that many people enjoyed it. There are toxic elements in any large fandom, but I’ve seen a whole lot of positive people coming from the G4 crowd as well. That said, fanbases as a whole have never defined or dictated my feelings towards any particular franchise. :)

I love to tear down every little aspect I don't like about my fandoms but damn, ain't that the truth about Star Wars. SW is the go-to antifandom right now. It's sad. I say as a pessimist and SW fan who isn't touching its fandom with a ten foot pole right now

It makes me long for the simpler, more innocent time when there was just the prequels vs. originals divide. :P

I don't want to derail too much and turn this into Star Wars Talk but same. And that divide was already extreme. Back then my dad was like "haha I remember when the main problem was the third one and the Ewoks". It's like the bigger a franchsie gets the more differences will occur and you end up with many cliques within said fandom.

Spoiler
It has happened to MLP and it could happen again. I guess by the end of the day each fan needs to find a niche and stick with a "crew".
For MLP I just wish we could do away with the brony thing. I mean it. Just have everyone be an MLP fan and not make up names for people who only like a certain generation. People could still stick to their crew but it wouldn't be too much of an Us VS Them.

I know that Bronycons always had some other gens trickle in but speaking for myself, I never felt comfortable associating with the entire brony thing so I never felt "connected" even tho I like G4.
It wasn't like Star Wars where at least every fan loves something about the franchise in itself and respects the original trilogy somehow. With G4 it became very much "new MLP is the only valid MLP" and the cons that originated fom that always mirrored the new MLP and its brand new fandom.
Honestly, the entire fandom vibe was different from all gens that came before. Not just because there were more people but because a lot of them wanted to separate from Gen 1-3.

Long story short, each fan can have their clique but integrate the MLP generations, please.

The most hilarious thing is that FiM actually addressed the divides and infighting in fandoms... XD The entire episode “Stranger than Fanfiction” is about Rainbow Dash arguing with a pony named Quibble Pants (voiced by Patton Oswalt, lol) about whether the original or sequel “Daring Do” books are better. In the end, they both realize that they enjoy different things about the books, and THAT’S OKAY. They can still get along, be friends, and not put down the things that the other enjoys.

Most relevant/almost fourth-wall breaking friendship lesson EVER.

Quibble Pants

That is an unfortunate name to wish on any pony. Not to mention I hate to think what the symbol might be.

What kind of mean parent wished that on their pony child? XD

In seriousness a lot of fandoms could take that lesson :/

This one dealt with it in a sense with the G2s and the arguments then, but I think that now there are more outlets for comment than back in the late 1990s, it's a bigger problem in a lot of fandoms.
