It's the bit where the wing goes into the pony :D on either side of the button. On most first year ponies it's all closed up so you can't see the end of the wing tab.

On all second year ones the wing slots in so you can see the base of the wing notched under the plastic socket. These are way easier to slip wings in and out of, and also are meant to be sturdier. They are certainly easier to repair.

@Ponyfan -I can't tell with Honeysuckle, her hair is in the way, but Rosedust definitely looks that way to me.

RoseNoire, here’s a pic of the wing tabs, using a bit of Xmas tree to illustrate the wing tab  :P the 2nd year ponies have the open style, so you can see the wing tab (or tree in this case). The original flutters have the closed in type, where you cannot see the tab :) I hope this helps, interested to hear how your flutters wings are!

Ohhh, I see clearly now ! Oh my, you have a great eye. x)
I went to check on all my flutters and they all have the open type. Here's the list with their name and hair type.

Forget-me-Not (definitely very curly).
Lilly (No more curly than the MIB showed previously)
3 x Morning Glory (They are all well curly)
Peach Blossom (I'm not sure about her level of curl. I felt like she was pretty curly, but after a look at her pic when I got her, she has a curl just a bit messier than your MIB Lilly)

Another very curly Forget-me-not. I wonder if this is a European thing...

Interesting that all of yours have 2nd fixings.

Yeah, I was expecting some differences between some of them. No wonder I had no idea what you were talking about, hehe. ^^
And what about the fat-headed flutters ? Are their wing mechanism different ? I have no fat heads to compare. (Well, I do have one wonky MorningGlory with one eye more dilated than the other, but that's another story. rofl.)

I have four flutters and have now checked them all. Rosedust, Honeysuckle and Lily were childhood ponies and all have that one long factory curl in both their mane and tail. Morning Glory I picked up used at a swap meet about a month ago and she has just a little wave left in her hair as it was all brushed out by her precious owner(s).

Rosedust - open wing tabs
Lily - open wing tabs
Honeysuckle - closed wing tabs
Morning Glory - closed wing tabs

On a side question...how do you get broken flutter wing tabs out of a closed slot? Honeysuckle still has her broken wing tabs in. Maybe a toothpick or tweezers?

I don't have anything to contribute, as I don't have any of the first set of Flutters.

But it does make me wonder about the upcoming repros and if the wings will have open tabs for easy repair in the event of an unfortunate accident or destructive child?

Here we have:
Wind Drifter - open wing tabs. Hair in one long curl.
Lily - closed wing tabs. Hair in one long curl.
Rosedust - open wing tabs. When my gf bought her from a car-boot sale back in the 90s, her hair was faded totally white and also in the most amazing wild corkscrew curls! No idea if they were original or the work of a hairdressing child. Had a photo but can't find it at the moment.
All of them are from the UK.

That...rings a bell. I am sure I have also seen a Rosedust like that, faded out to white but mad mad curls. I think at the time I put it down to toy abuse, but now I'm not so sure.

And she may have had open fixings. Though I don't have one like that now, and I had assumed otherwise, you saying that makes me somehow remember this grimy pony with her messy as heck hairdo and dirty open fixings from which I stole the wing tabs to fix some of my broken wings...

So I may have been lying all along when I said I hadn't seen Rosedust like that. I think maybe, on reflection, I have.

I had a full set of Flutters form new. Forget-Me-Not had closed wings tabs and all the others have open ones. I wouldn't know about how their hair came because they've been messed about so much their hair is just tangles now.

That definitely looks familiar. I have definitely seen a Rosedust like that in the past too.

Mine! Mine is like that! I'd always assumed the girl I got her from had done it.
