Customs help - Hair and mould help please!
« on: May 20, 2019, 04:38:48 PM »
Hi friends!

So a few things

What would you recommend for filling in holes/tears? I tried going to 2 art shops and neither had Apoxie sculpt (unless I'm missing something)My Hearthrob has some damage on her rear legs (also sorry that it's blurry)

And does anyone know if I need to seal Heartthrob's filled in wounds/paint?

Also does anyone know what I should use for sculpting? I wanna use my Berry Bright to try to make a more masculine mould.

How much hair would I need to get to rehair G2 and G4?

I'm gonna get some hair for Sky Skimmer, Crystal Empire Celestia and Crystal Empire Cadence (both full mane and tail) and I'm gonna just get one hank for my Tex as his original owner's brother was very mean to her ponies :(

Air-dry clay could be a thing too, just be sure it's well inserted into the pony with a coat of varnish and everything should be fine. (because it tends to pop off when dried) I've patched up a horn with that media and it looks seamless.

I know Text's pink is Heartthrob and his blue streak is Forget-me-not.

I don't think Apoxie is sold in stores. If you can't find a different two part clay, you can do air dry clay or polymer clay would work too. You can set it with a hair dryer or embossing gun. The hard part is going to be matching the paint. Probably lots of trial and error to get the right shade.

For mold making there are silicone kits but they're usually for smaller things. You could look into plaster molds, but I don't know anything about them personally.

Air dry clay could work, but you need a two part epoxy clay. I've only ever been able to get apoxi sculpt online. Hopefully an Australian person can help :)

I personally either use Apoxi Sculpt or Milliput for sculpting or repairing holes/damage to ponies.

One had on hair should be plenty to rehair a G2 or G4 pony :)

For filling little bite marks and tears, I have always used gap filling super/hobby glue. https://www.amazon.com/Bob-Smith-Industries-BSI-133H-Insta-Cure/dp/B0166FFCIM/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=gap+filling+super+glue&qid=1559565020&s=gateway&sr=8-3   It is generally used in model building and is used to both join pieces, but also fill cracks and gaps left by ill fitting parts.  I am not sure what the availability in Australia is though.

I apply the gap filling super glue over the damaged area, letting it "mound" over the wounded area slightly and then lightly sand with the finest grit hobby sanding swizzle sticks.  https://www.amazon.com/Flex-I-File-Hobby-Sanding-Sticks-15-pack/dp/B01AC9RRB8/ref=sr_1_15?keywords=hobby+sanding+sticks&qid=1559565628&s=gateway&sr=8-15  I usually gently wipe the area (in one pass) with acetone or alcohol for clean up and to "settle" the sanded area.

If needed you could color match some paint and lightly paint over the area.  I have found that using a makeup sponge (or airbrush if you have one) versus a paint brush works better for blending.  Good luck! :)

I also think for small marks, a filler as cookhuman suggesyed rather than clay is more ideal. Air dry clay can work, but with how much it can shrink or how people have complained about the brittleness, I usually avoid it. Apoxie sculpt seems to only be purchasable online, but people usually speak highly of it. You can use baking clay on ponies. It makes some people nervous, but I've never had issue. With the G1s being thinner, they can get wobbly. But, they  harden back up like they were before. With baking, there is no shrinkage, you can mix colors, and there isnt as much of a weight issue. You might find it helpful to experiment on a different pony to see what method you like best.
