Detective Pikachu looks like it will beat out Sonic for sure. We'll have to see, but it's clear there is much more excitement for a live action Pokemon movie over the Sonic movie, so box office is no question.

I haven't seen the trailer for Sonic yet, but the one for Pikachu gave me cringe chills so if Sonic is worse then I guess I'll be having nightmares for a while xD.

I don't like how they interpreted the pokemon.  They look like stuffed toys that creepily move.  Charlie wants to be your friend!!

That said..well...y'all know my opinion on the sonic version if you've seen the other thread.  Honestly, let things be..I don't think it really matters which movie will do better ^^'

I'm not completely on-board with Detective Pikachu, personally. I think there are still some overdone unnecessarily creepy designs in there. It's just that Detective Pikachu also has some Pokemon that are done really well (like Bulbasaur). If Detective Pikachu hinged on designs like Ambipom and Jigglypuff, it wouldn't be much better than Sonic. However, it has much better designs otherwise, and Sonic only has Sonic. They went all for nothing and...failed. Lol.

Saleswise I guarantee Detective Pikachu will do better. Pokemon is the bigger franchise.

I think the difference is that the Detective Pikachu staff worked along side the Pokemon Company for the character design.. and despite people's opinions if they translate to the real world- you can tell the respect went in with their research.

In a way, Sonic is harder.. because he is an anthro hedgehog rather then just an animal like most pokemon are.

It's funny you mention that. Back in around 1998 or 1999 I remember having a heated debate with a pony friend (who is still a pony friend now) about whether Pokemon was a fad and whether Pokemon or Sonic were bigger. Now this much time on and honestly, I'm not sure, but it seems like Pokemon has grabbed the bigger side of the market. I have never been into Sonic, though, so I don't really know. It's just funny that I remember that debate back when we were teenagers, and now this thread and these films.

I have a problem with anyone being able to hear Pikachu talk even given the way the movie handles it. I also don't think it works in a real world setting because the CGI/real kind of creeps me out in a lot of movies, not just this one. But mostly I have issues with anyone but Ootani Ikue doing Pikachu's voice.
