I got the impression the makers of that trailer were trying to jump on the Detective Pikachu wagon. It doesn't really work well with Sonic, though.

I think the difference was they kept the sillhouettes for the pokemon. Sure, some of them are a bit creepy, but they look just like the cartoon.
Sonic's sillhouette got all messed up. His feet are too small, he's got a weird snout, and he's too humanoid. Even with Mr. Mime, who is the most humanlike, he still looks like an expanded cartoon and retains the sillhouette.
Maybe they need to hire some designers from the Detective Pikachu movie to show them that it's ok to have him look just like a furrier version of his game appearances.

I have doubts about the redesign. It seems like an awful amount of work in general in too short of time. :/ I feel bad for the ones that are going to need to scramble to get it done.

The redesign isn't what would take a long time. (And a quick and dirty photoshop job, takes no time at all-- they need to redo the 3D model). But re animating him and placing him in the scenes and all of that will take time. If he's shorter (which they better chop those legs in half!), the way he interacts with the human characters all needs to be altered as well.

Nothing looks good when done fast. pure irony.

I used to play Sonic.  But... I never envisioned a movie for him.  Just the idea sounds awful. Then let loose Jim Carrey? Nope.  I love Jim Carrey in more serious films, but not when they just let him fill the void.

It sounds like a longshot to me, and a waste of money cause they do take time to do, but on the other hand, crazier things has happened.

That sounds like such a waste of work and money. Of course these big corps have money to spare but nowadays a movie is considered a "flop" if it doesn't gross an obscene amount of money in the first few days.
Why would they tamper with their liscense and make fans - the people most likely to support the movie - angry in the first place?
I realize there is a lot of scams and staged outrage going on these days to get attention but this is Sonic. Sonic is just Sonic. Lol, I just can't believe this conspiracy theory because of Sonic, I admit.
What would it gain them? Before/After online articles? Fans boycotting the movie because they are already fed up?

Okay, now I will keep an eye on this thread just to see the final Sonic. They got me

To me it's an Occam's Razor thing:  the simplest explanation is the most likely.  IMO the simplest explanation is that they just were too close to the movie to realize how trash Sonic looks.

I'm not sure if they fully realize it even now.  Like, the problem isn't "he doesn't look close enough to the video game character", the problem is "he looks like an unsettling cryptid."  I hope they aren't just going to put gloves on him and assume that solves the issue (although at least that would hide his freaky hands which I haaaate).

I'm fine with the dumb part-- because sometimes my brain needs dumb.

I'm gonna eat a hoho every now and then, despite it tasting like junk. If my hoho had a adorable piped Sonic, that would be great!

But there's no way I'd watch it with Sonic looking the way he does now. That's just disrespect to me, and I refuse to support that. (I'm not sure how big of a Sonic fan I am, as I only played the original sega games, and sonic mania).
