I was glancing through the prototypes page of the wiki and noted that some were clearly in the hands of collectors.  How much have these rare ponies sold for in the past?  Would they even potentially go for more than a Takara?

Idk if this would help but Moonbreeze has had success finding G2 prototypes, one being found by a friend at a flea market (or something like that) in France, where the friend picked it up and gave it to her.

I also believed she bought another kinda prototype online, I don't think for ridiculous prices but it may just be because G2 wasn't popular.

It depends somewhat on how they show up. Some have been found at second hand markets. Some also sell for less for poor labelling as well. Also often people who buy ooak are understandably reluctant to discuss prices online.

In the case of my susie she was in a poorly marked auction and cost just over $20 18 years ago. But at that time we assumed many more would follow as alt poses as proper ussues in different places are a thing. It never happened though...so I imagine now she would get more attention. (I don't consider her a prototype but a product sample as she appears in the hasbro catalogue but while I think there were originally a few of them for show at toy fairs, she is the only one that has so far surfaced.)

It depends, honestly. Like Taffeta said, a proto that's not marked as such can easily slip through the cracks and go for an insanely cheap price. And I know people have managed to score protos at car boot sales, etc before from people that didn't know what they had (who was it that found the Paintingtime proto?). One that's marked as an OOAK, it depends on what it is, how many people bid, how much interest it gets, what the starting bid is... etc etc. There really is no hard and fast price for OOAKs, it's all about how much people are willing to pay.

It's pretty cool that some were found cheaply!  I bet that must be absolutely thrilling to find as a collector.

Some of these also were unearthed in times when pony knowledge about such things was a lot less than it is now.

So determining what was a variation or an exclusive or something more was much more in shades of grey.

Although I feel sometimes that it's going back into those shades of grey, generally now I think most people would realise if something abnormal came up, whereas 20 years ago someone might have just assumed it was a UK variant or something else.
