If you hit up tiggums on here she has a similar catalogue she got from a NZ toy shop in the day :) I have seen it but have never been fussed by historic release to pay attention to any of the detail

Noted! I'll try to contact them!

Post Merge: April 25, 2019, 04:04:32 AM

Update! I contacted the seller to ask if they could take some pics of all the MLP stuff in that catalogue, hoping they will. Also I can't seem to find the user tiggums?

Edit: Also requested it be added to the state library, so we'll see how it goes.

Edit edit: the seller said no :(

I think the original magazine is still up for grabs and the new one is currently priced at AU$279.99 (the seller then gave me a 7% discount which I ignored)

Interesting...

I've always had the impression that, aside a couple of things Australia had largely the US line in the early years and then the European stuff later on...

Your catalogue images certainly support that idea...even down to the names and the accessories involved...

EXCEPT the newborn twins, which includes the US set of six pairs, but there are some UK names for the 3 sets we had here (Tuggles and Toddles, Fluffy and Fleecy, Tickles and Giggles) then something brand new - Freckles and Speckles? Bunkie and Binkie? I'd love to know what the US catalogue says for them and also if they were ever sold under those names or if that was a late change...

Also if the whole set had been sold in the UK, whether those were the names we would have had for the other twinsets. THe boxes for that year for the twins in the UK and the US are identical at the front but different on the back (showing 3 sets not 6) as far as I am aware so who knows!
Also Puddles and Peeps...not Peeks!

It's a shame the Sundae Best page isn't there because I want to see how much the names are messed around in it..

Some of those images may also be in US catalogues? I feel I've seen a couple of them before.

First time I've ever seen something officially hasbro amend the spelling of Watercolor to Watercolour :) Over here they got renamed to Colour Change Baby Sea Ponies so that problem didn't occur.

But the catalogues are awesome to see and so cute :D I'm glad you're still digging into this. There are so many questions still about Australia ponywise that it's great to fill in some of the details!

I can agree Taffeta friend! And I don't ever plan to stopping my research! Maybe putting it on the back burner for a while, but not stopping. And I'm planning on updating the ponies found in Australia list eventually. Just as a interesting note, approx 3 Sundazzle (?) ponies have popped up.

I love stuff like this and enjoy seeing how the ponies were marketed in different countries.

Interesting!  I have a US catalog that has some of the same sets / pictures (like the Summer Wing ponies) but not all of them (mine definitely doesn't have the ponywear picture).

Are the twins included in yours? I am curious about the names...

The TAF prototypes in the ad look really different to the actual releases. So cool!

Also I love the backdrop and setup of the winger ponies. Totally stealing that idea!

Ah, lovely detective work... Thank you for sharing!

Interesting!  I have a US catalog that has some of the same sets / pictures (like the Summer Wing ponies) but not all of them (mine definitely doesn't have the ponywear picture).

The ponywear picture is from previous year's toy fair photoshoot, the one that gave us the vanishing Pony Friends girls. That alien landscape with the magenta sky and blue ground is a dead giveaway.

As far as I can tell, the rest of the pictures and much of the copy are identical to the Hasbro-US catalogue. Aside from a generous sprinkling of 'u's, only the twins' names are vastly improved changed.

It's a pity that the Big Brothers aren't here. There's a funny little mistake in in the American version, and I would have been interested to see what the Australian localizers did with it! Did Australia have the Mountain Boys, or were they just boy-less that year?

The TAF prototypes in the ad look really different to the actual releases. So cool!

Aren't they lovely? I never get tired of seeing Nightglider and Bonnie Bonnets in their prototype colors.

The Mountain Boys were 1987. Not 1988. So would be in a previous catalogue.
I would really like to know if they had them too. We had Mountain Boys in 1987, Adventure Boys (Big Brother I) in 1988 and Big Brother II in 1989...if Aus did have them and they were in this book, seems like if it was the first set in 1988, they might have had MBs in 1987, or if it's the second set in 1988, maybe not..

Also I wish we had the Sundae Best page image because from the fact there's a clip on the cover, that suggests the US release, but the names for these are messed up both here and in the US promotional stuff, and there are name changes, and the font on the cards is weird for some of them in the US...and with the twins having a weird mix of names, I just wanna know what the Aussie book says.

Also though I want to know if any of those names appear in the US release, or if not, where they came from. Because we had those three sets with those names but we didn't have the other three. I don't have a UK book for 1988, just the blue inserts, but only 3 sets are shown in those for the UK.

Geek stuff is fun :D
