I don't have any pictures, but I can confirm that Pretty Mane ponies were once conceived as a set of six. :) I don't think any actual prototypes exist, but the art for the backcard survived and was used as the basis for the HQG1C Artistry Girls.

I do not think it’s a hoax. The original designer for Scribbles and Dabble had the artwork for the original set that they designed. How far into production that set got is a mystery, but the original concept was for six ponies.

Agreed. There's concept art.

It's not a hoax.  I believe the info originally came to light at Pony Fair when Ruth Bush (former Hasbro designer) brought some concept art with her.  :)   Some of the art was unused pony concepts or sets.  Other art was of ponies that were put into production, but not necessarily as they were originally conceptualized.

For example, the Summer Wing molds were originally intended to be used as baby flutter ponies.

This is the first I've heard of the Pretty Mane Ponies being intended as a set of six, but then I haven't focused a whole lot on that set. It doesn't surprise me, though - after all, sets of six was the norm!

Well that's completely adorable!

It's a shame no one has the artwork without a giant watermark. :/

A lot of this knowledge has come to light recently, due to original Hasbro designers/artists participating at conventions and the like. So having been in the community for a long time has nothing to do with it. There's still so much that went on behind the scenes at Hasbro that we don't know about, but I hope we'll continue to learn more. (Really hoping the upcoming MLP episode of The Toys That Made Us will reveal something exciting)

For example, the Summer Wing molds were originally intended to be used as baby flutter ponies.

Kinda wish HQG1C would do something with this. Bring back the baby flutter concept! But don't know if many people would be interested.

I've never seen the artwork for these before. :lovey: Does anyone know it they were planned to be a store release and then when it was decided to only make the pair Hasbro changed them to mail order? The art looks so detailed and although it might have been intended for a mail order pamphlet it reminds me of back card art.

These are so cool! Ugh I would adore this set. I might have to start getting into the HQG1C stuff. Pity they never made it to production back in the day though. Seeing G1s that were designed but never made into real toys is so bittersweet! Does anyone have a better photo of the artwork?

To me they do feel like they were intended to be a store set because usually Hasbro took photos of mail order ponies instead of doing an illustration / art.  (I mean, sometimes they will illustrate one or two ponies from a set for the front of a brochure but usually not all of them if that makes sense.)

That's just a guess on my part though.

The art we've seen definitely feels more like backcard art to me. The way it's laid out and everything.. I can definitely see a backcard story on there. Plus like LadyM pointed out, a lot of mail orders didn't have art.

I wish we could see the art without the watermark, too.

For example, the Summer Wing molds were originally intended to be used as baby flutter ponies.

I'd be interested!
