Wild pony stories
« on: April 01, 2019, 10:06:46 PM »
Hi friends, I'm wondering if anybody has any nice stories of where and what ponies were found?

Like did you find a lot of g1's at a second hand shop, did you find them at an estate sale, garage sale, ect? For me personally, I haven't found any ponies since like Feb and I've yet to find a G1 or G2 pony.

My best ever pony find was Lullaby Nursery for free! They were going to throw it away but we rescued it! http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,393181.msg1739238.html#msg1739238

Other favourite in-the-wild finds:
- At the same charity shop as we found the nursery, on another occasion we found Bedtime Newborn Sunset for 50p!
- Baby Lickety-Split was found in a charity shop on a day out. This was especially exciting as my gf always wanted Baby Lickety when she was little. 20 years later she finally found her!
- Bow-Tie was my first ever charity shop pony find, and she cost 75p. I know she's not super-rare or anything but I was soooo excited to see a G1 pony in the wild! I grabbed her up and had trouble letting go when I got to the checkout .
- We found a pony-themed blanket for a doll's crib in an antique shop which was super exciting. http://imgur.com/a/Z6Dv7SQ
- My mum was helping a friend take some bags of unwanted stuff to the charity shop and spotted a dilapidated G3 Petal Blossom on top of one of the bags! She nabbed her for us, and Petal Blossom joined the herd as my first G3.

I was just starting to get into g1 and I went to a thrift store with my mom.
First I found nothing but then, lo and behold, a tailless seashell was just sitting there. Her mane was so bad it had to get rerooted and she had no tail was gone but otherwise perfect. I immediatly picked her up, knowing she was legit. (Thanks internet) She was 75 cents. And from Italy. She is still my favourite to this day. :) Also later I went back to that same store to see the excact same fakie that was being sold at a thrift market the other week. Didnt get her tho.

:0 I'd say that's nothing short of a miracle! It looks so pretty in your photos and almost all accessories! :0 And a Nirvana baby! Such a lovely find! I'm presuming the Baby Lickety-Split was the Lickety-Split featured in the Lullaby nursery? I'd say finding a G1 is exciting regardless of it's rarity and finding a doll blanket of the same pony! And dilapidated Petal Blossom? May I ask if dilapidated means warped?

An Italian Seashell? :0 What a lucky find! But was there a fakie of Seashell next time?

All my great wild pony finds come from the 1990s.

The biggest being when the local collector sold up and so there were 600 G1 ponies on offer. Some were £1 each, some 50p. In that sell up, we got 5 of the windy wings, the jewellery babies, a whole bunch of others including a few MIP. Also, Baby Gusty. I knew this collector had her, but couldn't find her when I went to their house to buy stuff...so I thought she'd been sold. But then later I found her hiding in the show stable and she's still the only PACS baby Gusty I've ever found in the wild.

There used to be tons of ponies around here, though. I've had ten or fifteen Ice Crystals, and even found a Mimic once although she wasn't sold here. Now - you're lucky to get anything at all. Times change :/

My sister used to get given stuff for free. Ponies. Carebears. Pony dragons. You name it. She never asked for anything, but when we began carbooting, my sister was aged around eight, and she was small for her age and deceptively cute looking. So she got a lot of free stuff. Some of which I traded for her online to get US ponies she wanted and couldn't get in the UK.

...Miss those days. Ponies were so much cheaper, so much more available, and it was possible to just trade, rather than having to shell out lots of money, because ponies were kind of a currency in their own right then.

I'm a relatively new collector, but I have had some finds :)

My first G1 find was at an antique mall. I had liked G4 and G3 beforehand, but I didn't really like / know about G1s. I saw a basket full of them, and decided to buy three (Magic Star, DJ, and blue baby Ember). I would have bought more but they were pretty expensive. When I got home and looked them up, I found all of the resources on G1s, and I decided I would collect them :)

The second find I had was at my local Goodwill. I walked into the toy isle and there were 13 G1s together! I got all of them (there was Applejack, Medley, Moonstone, Dancing Butterflies, Nibbles, Dibbles, Baby Lofty, and a few more.) Right before I left I checked the toy isle again, and there was a Sunnybunch that wasn't there before, so I grabbed her too. They made up the bulk of my collection for a while, and on a random note, they smelled like children's tempera paint...

The biggest find I've had was through craigslist. I bought a listing of about 100 G1s plus some playsets, plushies, accessories, and even a Dream Beauty. The seller said she had boxes more of G1s (!) so after she found some more boxes, she sold them to me, so now I have 4 big bins of pony stuff from her! There was even a MOC in the second lot!

I hope you have good luck with your finds :)

I started hunting ponies in the wild around the year 2000 to 2002 or so, then again in 2010-2012 and then again in 2017 till now. I often think of all the stuff I missed out on haha...

But as for some finds:
In the 2000 time frame I mostly went to garage sales, the Goodwill near my house and a few flea markets just once in awhile so I didn't find that much even though surely there were a lot more ponies available, I just didn't go enough. I remember one time finding L'il Sweetcake and L'il Cupcake at a flea market. The vendor sold only girls toys from the 80s and had expensive prices so I only got sweetcake. So now I wonder what was "expensive" to 13 year old me and wish I would've just bought both. Haha

In 2010-2012 I found hmm maybe a dozen G1 ponies and hundreds of G3 it was the perfect time frame for little girls to get rid of their childhood collections.

And since 2017 it's the most ponies I've found in the wild ever. I don't think because more are being pulled up from basements but rather now I know where to look, garage  sale ads are available with pictures online, and I can drive myself anywhere everyday haha. Some recent highlights:
- Yellow Moondancer at the flea market for 5$ I'm in MN
- Mimic, Barnacle and Princess Serena all with complete accessories at the thrift store last month 5$
- Lavender Dream Castle at a garage sale for 4$ and a bunch of ponies for .50¢ (that was especially lucky because I went there on the second day of the sale after noon but it was still there!)
- A big lot of ponies, satin slipper and Paradise estates with tons of accessories for 45$ off Craigslist (though I saw the listing 8days later and a collector literally down the road from me got all the rare ones haha)

I have pictures of all my finds up on my IG @moonglowdreams

My finds are pretty tame, but here's some notable ones.
-SS Angel and Bangles with full flocking and in great condition at a nearby toy consignment shop...for $15.99 altogether!
-I found a UK G2 (Magic Motion Morning Glory) for pretty cheap at a nearby flea market.
-Lavender Satin 'n Lace was $1! She's in excellent condition.
And whenever I can get a G3 for $1 I'm pretty happy.

I've only found G1s in the wild a few times but my two favorites.
-First G1 was NSS Cherries Jubilee in a tiny family run thrift store in a tiny rural town. My college roommate must have thought I was nuts for asking for three dollars. Because I'd left my wallet at home and I really, really wanted Cherries.
-Found a tailless Moondance at a small sci-fi con last May. She was in a bin of odd n ends toys which I dug through on a hunch.
Both are nothing special but they meant something to me, Cherries is sadly long gone but I have Moondancer.

This weekend I was at the goodwill bins with my husband. I was poking around the already out bins and he was hanging out when new ones came out. By the third round he finally said to me, you should be going when the new bins are coming out, saw a re-seller grab 6 ponies. Yes, I went to the next round and right in front of me was a long haired Bowtie (the stars do align). We stayed a hour after that and there were no more ponies.... Two weeks ago I pulled an alligator float out of a bin. Finds are few and far between now, with only one or two items each time.

Best find SSN Pink Dreams for a quarter at a thrift store about 7 years ago.

600 ponies?! Jewelry babies?! 10 or 15 Ice Crystals?! I miss the 90's and I wasn't even there for the most of it! (I was born in 98)

The 1990s were good times. It seems weird now, but those kinds of finds happened. The Jewel babies I mention only because it's the only time I ever saw them ever in the UK, I've never had doubles of any of them. Ice Crystal and the other Mountain Boys (not all at once, 15 xD but over a few summers total) I found a lot. The only one I didn't find many of was Tornado. Maybe 2 or 3. The most common was Thundercloud, I have probably had 30 or 40 over a period of 6 or so years for him.

But that was then and there were a LOT MORE ponies out and about then than now. So that kind of find would never happen now.

I used to bring home an average of six to eight g1 ponies every week between around May and September right after MLP ended. I would only pick up ponies I needed or my sister did, or later, ones I knew we could trade - like the mountain boys and such - so there were always ponies left behind. There were regular sellers with mats of ponies for £1 each that I would buy from often. It was just a different world.

My family is huge on garage sales, thrifting, and antique stores and has been since I was little (I can't actually remember the last time I got clothes in a retail store) so I've found my fair share of ponies over the years. Currently I go pony hunting at a local antique mall where I've had some amazing luck, as well as three thrift stores in the same area that I've also had luck at in the past. Occasionally when I have a free day I go pony hunting in other towns/cities, too.

I've found everything pony-related from intact tray puzzles to erasers to toppers off gumball machines. Some of these stories I've already told a few times on here so apologies if I'm repeating myself, but probably a couple of the weirdest/wildest I've found are:

- TWO Rosey Poseys at the same Savers store in New England  when I was thirteen/fourteen-ish (I believe it was in Massachusetts). I found the first one, who was in mint condition with her hair still in plastic wrapping and bands and everything (no bag/certificate though, which is a shame, but oh well) and had no clue who she was. I thought she was super cool because of the dolphins on her symbol and, being a fairly serious collector even at that age, I got her home and immediately looked her up. You can bet I was excited when I realized how rare she was! We started making regular trips to that Saver's and then about a week later we found another Rosey Posey there. The second one's hair's pretty frizzy but still, I mean...what's the chance of that. The second one belongs to my lil sister who doesn't actively collect, but has a few ponies that she loves and displays alongside mine. Our guess is that a lot of people attended the charity and then just donated the ponies to thrift stores, or else gave them to their kids who then eventually donated them.

- Dancing Butterflies and Baby Dancing Butterflies as a pair at a random, really small thrift store in Vermont when I was maybe eight or nine. I think I paid like $4 for both and they're still in amazing condition because I was super gentle with them.

- Baby Woolly who I also believe I got at the same thrift store as the Dancing Butterflies pair.

- Also in Vermont when I was younger I used to just find entire boxes of ponies from college-age people who were cleaning out their childhood toys. I got a good amount of my G1s like this, including Paradise, Steamer, my sister's Salty (with his hat), Princess Dawn, Baby Stockings, etc. I also got an entire G2 playset, including maybe four or five G2s, from a sale being held at some private school. Those G2s have since been lost but yeah.

- This is probably my best find at my local antique store to date.

- Here's that gumball topper I mentioned at the start of the post. I think it was perhaps broken off but just played with like a toy and passed around. It's one of the oddest finds I have, but I love it! Also here's the puzzle and the eraser.

- I actually found a Munchy at an antique store in Tennessee once, but didn't buy her because I had limited vacation money. I am still kicking myself over that one because as I grew up, she became one of my favorite ponies.

- And lastly on the subject of 'should have bought but didn't', the local antique mall had an entire carry case of G1s for $20 that I didn't buy because I wasn't back in the hobby yet and I am so disappointed in myself ahaha

I tend to find a ton of G1s, G3s and G4s out here, from all different sets, but I haven't found a single G2 yet. Not even a McD's one. It's so odd! I guess it shows how different the distribution was out here than in New England.
