Horse Colour Experts - help? :)
« on: March 31, 2019, 01:03:23 AM »
I'm brainstorming how I want to paint a custom Breyer I'm working on, I'd like it to be realistic but unique... My idea is pinto markings with one side completely white and the other side solid coloured, split down the spine in an uneven/splashy way.

Is that something that could ever occur naturally, if rare? I've googled pictures but can't find any evidence of a horse that exists with such an appearance.

TIA for advice  ^.^

Hi there! I've studied horse genetics for awhile as a hobby (I used to pedigree/show Breyers). I think your best bet with this might be the 'chimera' genetic mutation. Most of the time it ends up looking more like calico cats with three or more colored-patches, but as you can see:

Might be just what you're looking for! Chimera has a lot of different effects in terms of color too so that might be your best bet <3 I'd recommend doing some research on that perhaps?

Another possibility is an extreme frame or splash overo. They tend to have a lot of white on one side, and especially with frame, rarely does the white cross over the back/withers to the other side.

Hope this helps some!

Thank for the suggestions, both great examples that are definitely producing more reference images of coat patterns similar to that which I'm planning. :)
