Now that G3's are nearing 20 years old...
« on: March 08, 2019, 07:10:14 PM »
Are they considered "vintage"?
I've seen a few auctions where they are labelled as such, and I have snorted dismissively.
But then I had a wee pause. Are they now 'vintage'?!

I mean, I grew up with them and so I would definitely say they have the nostalgic values that I would associate with something vintage... but I am a youngster, haha. I'm 20 years old.

But then, on the other hand, it is weird to view something I played with as a kid as vintage. Does that mean I'm vintage? I certainly don't feel that way.

Hmm... personally I think they are still a little young to be called vintage. When did the community/sellers start referring to G1s that way?

I think rule of thumb for things to be called 'vintage' is that they're at least 20 years old.  But I'm with you on scoffing at G3's being vintage, they're still too new for me.  Or I'm just too old.

That was the generation I grew up with...honestly, where has time gone?! I haven’t even graduated high school, and man...feel so old hearing g3 as “vintage.”
This. Sentence. Is. False! Dontthinkaboutitdontthinkaboutit.

hmmmm i saw those too and thought it was funny, i think something should be at least 25years, 30 years yeah. btw how long have we been calling the G1's vintage?
you gota think of the early 80s... 35 years plus then the late 80s....

thats just it, you are still very young and had them as a kid, for me after seeing your comment its hard to call them vintage.
we are in 2019 and they came out? ...early 2000's? yeah, not vintage yet imo :P ;)

I think they are, but it seems weird! When I started collecting G1 in the early 00’s they were considered ‘vintage’ and they were only just 20 years old. I remember older people finding it hilarious when I described them as vintage toys though.

I am pretty sure ebay sellers labelled G1 vintage long before we did. G3 would be 16 this year, which is not vintage in my view. It's still quite a way off 20 and even if it got to 20 I agree that probably not until 25 would that be a realistic term.

I guess it also depends how you interpret the term vintage.

But no. Not for me. But I understand why it happens on ebay, because some sellers can't tell generations apart, and others want to distinguish Everything Else from G4.

geez... i didn't realise how long ago it was.

ebay sellers just want to put EVERYTHING in their title, though. not g4 = vintage or retro :P (or both, as i have seen before)

I think what stops many from considering G3 vintage (probably even in the future when the line is 20+ years old) is that they do still look really modern. I'm not up to date with how toy aisles look like at supermarkets, but I'd bet G3 ponies wouldn't look out of place, like G1s would.

I go with the standard "anything 20 years or older is vintage" so yeah, they're almost there!   And most G2 ponies are already there.

I thought classification went retro, vintage, antique, primitive?  I know the classifications aren't 100% clear especially when sellers just use them wily nily to their benefit. But regardless I can't see g3 as vintage yet, maybe  after the go around the 20 year bend it's still a bit early.

Haha, I second this 100%

If G3's are vintage, does that mean that G1's are becoming... Antique?  ;)
