Author Topic: Mold in MIB G3? To debox or try to clean? Updated 3/3 See bottom of pg 1 (Read 1384 times)

Hi,

I had to move some ponies today including my G3 MIB Styling Cheerilee unicorn. I noticed one side of the box appears to have mold inside

I bought her MIB from a good friend who I know took good care of her. I have also taken good care of her since she came to live with me. She had been living in my bedroom, out of sunlight and as far as I know the box hasn't been water damaged. I don't really want to debox her since I one of the reasons I bought was she was still MIB.

Could you post pictures? And is your area known for humidity? That's super upsetting.

Pic posted of one of the spots. Usually the humidity's pretty low where I live unless we get rain or fog. Her box isn't sealed well on the back but the tape is still intact.

I really hope's it's not mold. It's only on the box so far and not on the pony.

Eek

Try to shove silica packets in loose parts of the box if you can since it can absorb moisture. Then hope to stop that mold from spreading.

So it's mold?

I hope the silica packets work. I've never had this happen before.

It's not going to go away unless you clean it. It's likely going to spread if it's not cleaned either.

I'd check the humidity in the area it's being stored. Is the area near a bathroom? Is it near an attic space?

How would I clean it without removing/harming the pony? She's stored in my bedroom with other MIB toys. None of the other toys have mold growing in them.

If it's only on the plastic packaging, you can strategically slit the tape nearest the spots and use a long cotton swab to apply a weak bleach solution to clean the area. Killing the visible mold and reducing the water available to new spores is pretty much all you can do to protect your pony if you want to keep her MIB.

I'm now considering deboxing her to save the pony and stop the mold from growing any more or infection my other MIB toys. I'm also sensitive to mold so now that I know there's mold it's not something I want to leave too long.

For me, mold freaks me out, and at the first sign I'd be digging to find the cause to make sure it doesn't repeat on other things in the area.

30 years from now, the tape is likely to be old and brittle, so don't feel too bad if you are breaking that tape. I have MIB toys where the tape literally became so old where it pretty much fell off of the box.

I'm not quite sure how the box is constructed... But I'd say remove the tape as neatly as possible. Open up the box and take out all of the contents you can. Google whatever way you think is the best way to remove mold (It seems like either a bleach mixture, or vinegar mixture), let it dry, and put all the contents in.

Thanks banditpony. I might just debox her and throw the moldy box away instead of trying to clean it. I know I'll eventually find another MIB Styling Cheereliee.

I say remove the pony from the box and kill the mold, then air it out and wait a while before putting it all back in. You reeeeaaallly don't want it to spread.

She's in one of those gem style "Crystal Princess" boxes.

Update: Mold was also growing in the outer box. I ended up taking the outer box off and cutting the moldy parts of the inisde plastic away. I threw the outer box away and left her intact on the carboard. I will check her every few days and if the mold continues to grow I'll debox her the rest of the way.
