Mr. Super Clear for ponies?
« on: February 22, 2019, 02:12:44 PM »
I watch a lot of doll faceups on YouTube and it seems like almost all of them use Mr. Super Clear as a sealant.

Lately I’ve been reading MLP custom articles and watching videos and it seems like most people use something else, like Mod Podge.

I’ve never tried a doll faceup because I don’t feel like I’m good enough at drawing for that, but I am thinking about trying a custom pony, at least the symbols.

Is Mr. Super Clear unsuitable for ponies? Or do folks just avoid it because it’s a spray sealant and you need a mask?

I haven't tried Mr Super Clear, but I do know that Mod Podge isn't the best sealant for ponies.  It seems okay at first, but goes sticky over time.

I believe some have use it, others seem to prefer Testors Dullcote. If you use the forum search (uncheck all others except the Customs forum) you'll find some results for previous discussions about Mr. Super Clear. :)

Personally I prefer a brush-on sealant, although Mod Podge is a no no because it's essentially glue and therefore not waterproof, it will often turn sticky like Pokeyonekenobie said.

Personally, as someone who customizes Monster High, BJDs, and MLP; MSC is definitely suitable for use on vinyl (which MLP are made of).  It's what we (other half and I) generally use on MH heads which are also vinyl (although I often shrink the heads first, which gives a different surface than soft vinyl).  I don't usually have reason to seal my ponies as I use acrylic paint when painting on new symbols and I go for a very traditional look.  If you're working with pastels or pencils, you'll definitely want to use a sealer though.

My other half and I also use Duraclear matte varnish thinned with water on MH as well, I presume it would work on ponies.  It may take more than one coat and even the 'matte' can give a somewhat shiny finish.  MSC and Duraclear are the only two we've found that don't tend to get sticky over time.  Admittedly we don't know the very long term effect (I mention this, as, for example, acne cream was a popular treatment for spots on ponies but after ten years or so has shown to badly damage and discolor ponies), but we have BJDs which have lasted 10+ years very nicely with MSC and MH dolls which have lasted 6+ years the same.

Sort of a side note... MSC helps to prevent yellowing on resin (as it acts as a UV barrier), I wonder if it has any effect in that regard on vinyl.

Mod Podge as already stated isn't a good choice.

Thanks for the very detailed info!

Yeah I agree that Mod Podge would be a bad choice but I’m just suspicious of it in general, because people use it for everything. Seeing people use it reminds me of how badly I cringed when I found a YouTuber who was making custom ponies using all nail polish.

Surprisingly, customizing ponies with nail polish got me interested in customizing other dolls. I understand the mistakes now (I am so,so sorry my bait ponies for this) and am trying to get msc and the correct doll custom equipment to do it right. Thanks for the info!

I can totally understand that! I remember the first time I used nail polish for something...I had a silver and black necklace (just cheap costume jewelry) and the black was wearing off so I used black nail polish to make it look better! I think I was about 14 or 15. It just seems that with ponies and stuff it won’t last, and it would break my heart to put a lot of effort into a pony only to have it self-destruct later on!

I hope you have fun with your customizing! Share pics please!

I use this Vallejo 400ml Matt Acrylic Varnish Spray # 28531

On ponies and dolls, non toxic, non yellowing when I’m sealing them and it’s good for the ozone and also its quick drying.

Might have to give MSC a try. I do use mod podge to seal most FBR's on ponies (if I don't the paint looks flat/dry and can smudge), but I water it down and use very lightly.

Looks like you already got some great advise! Wanted to add my two cents; it seems like modge podge sealent was used in some early days and by people without a lot of access to other sealents. These days, people are talking more and more about it being a no-no due to drying, yellowing, and humidity issues. Mr. Super Clear is designed to seal vinyl, so it doesn't have these issues on ponies. Same with Testors Dulcote. They are more and more available, especially Testors, so you see more and more of them being used. In general, tips for customizing dolls tend to be very applicable to pony customizing.

Talk about mod podge, I'm done with it. I found a baby custom that I made years ago on the evilbay. The symbol has bled a bit from the mod podge. Where does one find Mr. Super Clear??

Now this is the real question! No stores around here carry it as far as I know. Where do you customizing people get it?

Ack, can't do amazon because I don't have a credit card... bummer. Might have to give testor's a try, pretty sure hobby lobby has all things paint in this brand.
