Help! Build a bear Fluttershy rough mane
« on: January 18, 2019, 02:19:38 PM »
I got this second hand fluttershy for 6 dollars and she came to me with mad frizz and tangles, even after her detangling and low flat ironing she still has rough hair. What do I do to smooth it out like a new mint condition build a bear pony?

Mabe trying to add warm wather, then massage some fabric softener into her mane and let it sit for a few hours, then give her a good rinse ? It worked wonders for a G1's tail I messed up, it got silky smooth. ^^

I fixed my pony’s hair with detergent. You flat-iron the hair like normal, but use detergent instead of conditioner, and apply it with a toothbrush to really get it in the hair. Just be sure to use gloves! It’ll leave a resident on the hair though, so I threw mine in the washing machine after, tied inside a pillow case so the hair wouldn’t melt.
I have photos somewhere, but the hair was pretty on par with the new plush, it was just straighter and the ends weren’t perfect. There’s tutorials on YouTube using this method if you’re interested.

Do I dry her on low or really low?

I personally just let mine air dry because the dryer can really mess up hair, but if you want to try I would do really low.
This is the tutorial I used: https://youtu.be/680nv2_tBrI

From my experience, Build a Bear hair is very difficult to fix and even if you get all the tangles out, very rarely does it go back to it's original state. It seems to mostly lose it's shine and silkiness. My Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Twilight all have very gross looking hair.

I've managed to repair two Twilights and a Rarity just by going over and over and over them. Both arrived with tangled tails and manes that were mostly lumps, and I did the same things you did. Rarity was the worst and I had to work her mane in strips about 3/4″ wide, repeatedly wet combing with diluted fabric softener and ironing, really stretching it but not yanking it out of her scalp. A bit of frizz remains at the ends, so I can't say it was perfect, but she certainly looks good enough for display.

Now, the Rainbow Dash BABW I found was tangled too, but she cleaned up super easy and looks almost new. Go figure.

flat iron, lots of cold water, patience and fabric softener or high grade repairing conditioner.  take small chunks of hair, like a CM in width and go through those slowly.

i have fixed many plush that look like that.  not to perfection but good enough for me.

If it still is too hard to brush, get a pet comb!!! they are metal and tough and the little tines on the comb will get in there.  just go SLOWLY.... this is a job with towels on your lap and a good series of drama shows to binge through.

Agreed! In my styling kit-

The white comb has metal tines that rotate. We got it ages ago for working with our eternally tangled Mane Coon, who hated being groomed. While it is super strong, I never pull very hard for fear of damaging something.

The black plastic one is about as cheap as you can get, super flexible, so it will, I hope, give before the hair does.

I must admit to doing a lot of hair combing while on Skype conference calls (audio only!)

My minty bab has a smoky smelling head like her head smells like burnt popcorn. How do I wash her without ruining her too? When I first got her I didn't smell it but now I'm starting to it's strange any suggestions

stick her in a big airtight bag of baking soda or kitty litter, like in a black trash bag.  put in the sun for a few days.
vacuum her - it should be better.  repeat as needed!

So washing her by hand isn't a good idea?
