Rescuing ponies you don't need
« on: January 06, 2019, 02:40:38 PM »
I didn't know if this should go here or in the corral.  I've read other posts where people faced the dilemma of buy the G1, or leave it behind.  Most of my doubles have come from buying lots.  I don't usually buy another pony I already have unless it's for my Satin N Lace army.
Well today I went to a flea market that I haven't visited in years.  I haven't found G1 ponies in the wild in forever!  In one booth at this market, there was Posey in a dress, Peachy, Shady, and two Parasols.  Everybody looked in great shape!  But I already have multiples of all these ladies.  I don't need them, plus I had no cash on me.
Well, I left and went to eat lunch.  I kept thinking about how pink Posey's hair was and how Shady is a favorite from the cartoon.  I went to an ATM, got the cash, and went back and got Shady and Posey.  I left the Parasols because I REALLY have too many of her and who needs another Peachy, right?
So I bought two ponies I don't need.
Who else is of the "leave no pony behind" frame of mind?

nooope. not me.

If it's a pony I do not want, I leave it for someone else who DOES want it. (Although it seems like that is the uncommon thing for pony collectors to do). One time I left a baby pony behind, and someone even made a brag on this forum finding her after I did.

At this point if they are in good shape, and a common pony I buy them to put in goodie bags for Halloween.

I do left the ponies that I already have unless they are upgrades or of great value. But that kinda hurts leaving the common ones. I don't know what their fate will be but I really can't buy them all. I just live with the hope they'll be in real good care instead of a destructive kid or a dog. Same with way too expensive G1s/ponies I can't afford. (Thinking of you, sweet white Tootsie and others....I'm sorry.) People trying to sell G1s for an absurd price with the sole argument of "They are old" without knowing anything about them really get on my nerves.

I haven't encountered many dupes of G1 ponies, but I figure it depends on who the pony is. If it's an early year pony I'll just leave her behind, but if it's a later year (like year 4 and beyond) I'll probably pick her up to clean. I love to clean ponies, and sometimes I figure I can get nice upgrades on some ponies as many of mine aren't in perfect shape.
If I end up with a pony that I don't need, it would likely be because they came in a lot/bag with one I did need.

I also collect old pound puppies and purries.  One time, I accompanied an old boss of mine to a dog show.  A booth at the dog show was selling old stuffed animals as dog toys.  There was a pound puppy in the pile.  I had no money on me that day either.  This was back in 1995-1997 sometime.  To this day I regret not saving that pup.  Someone's childhood toy ending up as a dog chew?  Aweful.  But then I have to remind myself that they are inanimate objects.  But still, I hate seeing things destroyed.
I guess I should have left Posey and Shady.  I'm not saving them, its just hoarding I guess.

Oh! Posey's hair is gorgeous! And Shady's flocking looks nice. She's one of my favorites.Well if you really feel you have too many you can always trade or something.

Hmm it depends on the price but if it's like a thrift store or flea market I usually grab all that aren't bait. I don't want to leave them for one of the many toy resellers around here to scalp a Moondancer for 17$ or such. Often I just put them up on the FB marketplace and sometimes it's fellow collectors who pick them up sometimes it's families

Depends on price and if I have it or not. If I had an unlimited supply of money and didn’t need to eat or anything, I’d buy almost any pony I came across! My friend sometimes says it’s like a retirement home. These ponies used to have kids to play with, and now they can be in the old mew’s retirement village!
Good finds by the way! I’m super jealous of posey. I have never found a posey with that pink hair before!

I find it so difficult to leave behind any ponies or Monster High dolls, and for years I could not leave Ty beanie babies either (I did rescue two out of a dog toy box once, which I'm glad I did). I've decided to stop visiting charity shops for a while because I don't want to add to my collection at the moment. I haven't found any doubles of G1s and I might find it easier to leave them behind for another collector if I did, but when it's a ratty-looking G3 or G4 I just think 'who else is going to appreciate it, I must buy it and restore it!'. I realise my mania for 'rescuing' damaged toys probably says something about me psychologically .
I also find it much easier to leave ponies or dolls that I've found in an actual vintage toy shop, because it's the sort of place collectors are more likely to go to.
Don't even get me started on trying to get rid of things, I am so bad at letting things go! I have to remind myself of that so as not to buy too much in the first place!
But your ponies look really nice, and if you're happy with them it doesn't matter that they're doubles :). As long as your possessions are making you happy and not stressing you out (I get stressed if I have too much stuff), then just keep enjoying them :).

G1 are pretty rare now on flea markets over here, so if it isn't offered for a ridiculously high price I won't leave it behind.
