I am soooooo tempted...
« on: December 02, 2018, 03:18:04 PM »
To start recollecting G1 ponies! I've been collecting G4 for my daughter and have been buying mostly from ebay, so I keep seeing all these awesome G1's that I either had as a kid or wanted! I really don't need to start another collection though, but gah I'm so torn! What to do?

I collect all gens and just stick with buying the ones I  like, its hard not to get carried away collecting thou. I try to keep my collection to 200 hundred ponies but I properly have around 400, when the collection is peaking I try to stick to a one in one out rules so when I buy another I have to think very hard do I really perfer this pony over another in my collection? It doesn't always work but helps keep the herd at bay

1) you could buy a 3 favorites, you don't need a whole collection.

2) one in, one out. It helps curb buying things in the spur of the moment. And it makes you evaluate if what you are buying is really what you want.

3) buy your baby girl the G1 retro reproductions that are currently out ;)

I'm a pony enabler personality type... I say just go for it! If you're not picky you really can pick up quite a few commons for reasonable prices.

I would say the important things to consider are:

Space - do you have a place to store new ponies?
Money - can you spare cash on them or do you need it for something else?
Longevity - do you think you will still feel the same in three months? Six months? A year?

The other suggestions are also good but everyone collects in their own way. I could personally never do the one in one out thing, to me that's not a collection, that's a swap meet, but for other people it works very well, especially if there are space constraints.

If you have a small list of favourites that you feel you'd like to own and keep then I don't see why (if you have the space and the money) you shouldn't go for it. But try not to impulse buy - try to choose specifically. Instead of one in, one out, try to only bring in the ones you want - it's better to only buy what you want and know you will definitely value and keep, rather than buying casually with the assumption you can swap something out later on - there's no guarantee another person will want the pony you are getting rid of at the later date (depending on demand, rarity, etc), and if you aren't really connected to that pony, there's not a lot of point wasting time and money obtaining it or having it take up space...

My opinion to collecting is....Never...EVER...*collect* just because maybe something become valuable down the years!!!

But this is a personal opinion...I alway's say * I collect Ponies not Moneys* Therefore it is ok for me to have some Ponies in my collection with *flaws* I don't see it as flaws but like *Battle Scars* because G1 Ponies are 30+ year old toys...

I think I'm going to go for it!
With my daughter's collection I set myself rules because I'm determined to get one of each character lol! So like I won't spend more than $5 per pony (including shipping), they don't have to be in perfect condition (since they're for playing with), doubles go to Grandma's, triples get turned into other pony characters etc. So I think if I come up with some rules for myself about G1's I won't get carried away lol!

A little history on my pony collection: I had all my childhood ponies which were from '83 to '88 up until around 15 years ago (when I sold them all because I needed $ and didn't have space), but before that I was still casually collecting when I found them at thrift stores and flea markets. I never had any G2, 3 or 3.5, but when G4 came out I bought a few that I just kept in the packages and displayed and drooled over others that I never actually bought at the time. Then my daughter liking MLP gave me an "excuse" (not that I needed one for any reason except in my own head lol) to get them!

So I don't think I'll lose interest.
I have space and money to spend on ponies.
I don't care if they're in perfect condition (since they'll probably get played with anyway).
I love them!

And that seems like enough good reasons to me lol!

Thanks everyone!!!
