Twinkle Eye Ponies in Europe and other places (Non-US)
« on: November 01, 2018, 07:57:45 AM »
Yeah, I have another annoying pony release question relating to the TE ponies and what ponies, if any, were sold in which place and (if possible) when.

The information I have so far goes like this:

United Kingdom
1986 - Fizzy, Sweetie, Gingerbread, Galaxy, Masquerade, Whizzer on 1986 style card, UK art. Came with puffy sticker, comb, ribbon.

1987 - Fizzy, Speedy (dark), Sky Rocket, Locket, Tic Tac Toe, Sweetie on 1987 card featuring white background and rainbow. Came with puffy sticker, comb (probably) and ribbon

Germany and France, possibly also Switzerland, Austria

1986-7? - same as UK but on translated cards, using same artwork as the UK release.
1988 - same set as 1987 UK release but with pale speedy. No sticker. Card 1988 style with thin border around the edge.

Netherlands, Belgium (?)

1986 set on translated bilingual cards, flat stickers, US art style (still trying to find my picture of sister's Fizzy ><)
(any other TEs sold? On what card?)

Edit to add: Italy
Appears to have had the same 1987 set as the USA.

Scandinavia - no Twinkle Eyes?

Spain - were there regular TEs as well as Spanish ones? What card art does Spain use?

Other parts of Europe...?

Other parts of the world?

I believe Canada had the same release as the US but on bilingual cards, so had all fifteen ponies.

Most especially I would like to know if any other places had the 1987 card used in the UK?
And how many TE ponies were available in your country?

I bought a bunch of Italian ads clipped out of comics or magazines, and Mimic and Quackers were featured in it.

Well, here in Belgium I've found Gingerbread, Galaxy and Whizzer from various owners, if that helps. I suppose that means they were sold here.

@LM - I totally forgot Italy! And you're right, I have a 1987 insert from there and Mimic and the whole of that US release set are shown on it. I am assuming they had Italian cards which were unique in design because other ponies from the same time period did. Thank you for flagging that one up!

@RoseNoire - thank you for that :D It really seems like that first set had a fairly universal release.

Spain - were there regular TEs as well as Spanish ones? What card art does Spain use?

Spain 100% sold Spanish TEs. Regular ones are rare in the wild/second hand here, and the answer I usually get for these is that they were purchased/gifted on holidays trip and such.

The card is the same as the UK, but with different comb (moon one for all). Example, not my picture:

The card says 1987, but the ponies feet say 1986. Only the first set were sold in Spain.

That set TE ponies were also sold up here in The Netherlands. I recall seeing Fizzy, Galaxy, Gingerbread and Masquerade a lot.

Hi Taffeta,

We had them too. I never did get one as a child, but I wanted them and that type of memory tends to stick. I have seen: Masquerade, Whizzer, Gingerbread (green eyed - I bought her) and Sweet Stuff.

Thanks all. @Perikoala that somehow makes sense given the other art styles used on Spanish cards. No regular TE ponies means I can hand them over to PKW to handle. Yay :D

@Nightglider, do you know if you had the later sets? Have any been found or do any of your acquaintances remember seeing or having any of them?

No need for the question mark on Scandinavia. I trust quite well this one site, and according to it atleast Finland did not have Twinkle Eyes.

Thank you for that. I seem to remember Ponyland saying something similar about Sweden, but since we've identified some variation between countries, I put the question mark in case it doesn't apply to Denmark and to Norway as well...

I have a feeling it applies to Norway as well. I wouldn't be certain of Denmark though.

Gingerbread, Sweet Stuff, Fizzy, Galaxy and Whizzer. So I think that's the first TE set.
I'm afraid I'm not sure on what card though!

Let's not forget the TE that is on a Seapony backcard

I'll send you over the German TE stuff I have, backcards and advertising etc :)

Thanks all. @Perikoala that somehow makes sense given the other art styles used on Spanish cards. No regular TE ponies means I can hand them over to PKW to handle. Yay :D

Oh yes, the pretty and pearly twinkle sea pony fizzyshower and Galaxy Lily. I do wonder if there are others. I feel like there are...and they all came out of Germany en masse on ebay years ago. I only have Fizzyshower but I remember Linnie (if you remember her) had Galaxy on Water Lily's card. I haven't seen any others appear online for years though.

That would be great, re the inserts. I have the 1987 booklet that also has the Rainbow (Nightlight etc) ponies in and stuff, and some comic ads for Germany but I think that's about it. I have Trixi (TicTacToe) MOC but I don't have a first set MOC in German and I am not sure if I've seen one on card....French, yes, but not sure about German...

It also still slightly confuses me that Hasbro did a whole different card for the UK release for 1987 and absolutely nowhere as far as I can tell right now had it except for the UK. Which seems a waste of design and printing, but anyway o.O.

I am thinking at some point to put all of my inserts and adverts and stuff that I have in my folder up online. But then it occurred to me maybe the best thing for something like that might be a section of the Gallery? An insert section for stuff from all over the world..?
