Fluttershy's Gift
« on: November 01, 2018, 07:28:04 AM »
Upon seeing the Best Gift Ever special, I've come to the conclusion that Fluttershy's gift of calming animals is too powerful. It's gotten so predictable that the Discord even talks about it in the special. Surely she should have animals she can't deal with? It just seems like the only reason the writers put animals in is so that Fluttershy can spend 5 seconds to calm them down. Is it really that much to ask for an animal she at least struggles with? Granted, she did struggle with the dragon but that was like Season 2 and IIRC she hasn't struggled with any since. The manticore back in Episode 1 was at least understandable fo being a quick turnaround but the new creature in Best Gift Ever was relaxed in about that much time. It just seems pointless to have dangerous animals on the show if they aren't going to be dangerous for very long.

She should have an Achilles heel of some kind.  Like an innocuous cute thing that you would not suspect.

Even Eliza Thornberry, whom pretty much has the same gift struggles with her ability against animals.

The dragon was season 1 actually and it makes sense to me that she wouldn't struggle much with calming animals since that is her thing after all.

Yeah but she should have some weaknesses. They're making her more like this goddess that cures all animals without much effort at all. It'd be one thing if she did it but it took a while but it's a mere 5 seconds each time.

Eh, I tend not to over-analyze the show that much (probably a result of having grown up on the older MLP cartoons where logic didn't apply at all, lol :P) but I don't see a difference between Fluttershy's animal ability and any other character's ability. Twilight and Starlight are near-invincible when it comes to magic; whatever is needed for the plot, bang they can just cast a spell they "just so happened" to look up at some point. Rainbow Dash's flying/speed is pretty much the same. And since the animal-taming thing has only really come up a few times -- at least to the point where it's important to the plot -- I don't see a problem with it. Just my opinion, though, I can certainly see why other might disagree with this.
