Watercolour pencils and pastels
« on: October 08, 2018, 07:28:45 AM »
Hi all. I’ve seen quite a few customisers using watercolour pencils and pastels now and I’m just wondering how they don’t smudge/get everywhere on the bodies? Someone also used pastels on the yarn hair. Can anyone enlighten me to these new methods and your experience. I’m a bit baffled but love the results! Thanks  :)

Mostly replying to stalk this thread,
But I've seen them growing in popularity in MH customs. It looks like they seal the face with something before doing each layer, so it's a lot of patience and buildup.
Beccabeecute on Instagram uses pastels, but I missed her livestream so I'm not sure if she in particular seals each layer before adding more.

Yesss her feed and customs are amazing! I wish I’d seen her livestream :( I saw a doll customiser uses the same methods. Really hope someone can shed more light on this as the results are beautiful!

They use Mr Super Clear to spray on the dolls faces and bodies, then they use watercolour pencils to draw the face on.

Other sprays are optional if you can't get MSC (that's toxic).

I haven't done this yet as I need to find an alternative to MSC.

Testers Dullcote is an alternative to Mr. Super Clear, and more available. It has a bit of a matte finish. I'm not as familiar with the other alternatives, but you can do a search for "Mr. Super Clear Alternatives" and find folks talking about all kinds of varnishes.

I've been using testors dullcoat on ponies for YEARS with no adverse affect, and I'm using it now on dolls.
I know other prominent customizers that also use it
