US vs EU Baby Starbow - Which do you prefer?
« on: October 07, 2018, 02:35:00 AM »
I've recently acquired an EU Baby Starbow recently, and I was really intrigued by the differences between her and her US counterpart!
Aside from the hair color difference, US Starbow seems to be made of a more translucent plastic (which I find discolors quite easily - can it be sunfaded?), while EU Starbow is made of a very opaque and bright white plastic.  US Starbow's symbol is quite light compared to EU Starbow's very vibrant symbol, but that might just be fading on my US Starbow (can anyone confirm?).
Which version do you prefer?

There are variations on this whole set, not just Starbow, but her differences stand out the most.

I personally only have the US one, my sister had the EU one from new so I don't have her. And you are right, the plastic type is different between them. There's also a curl in the purple on my sister's pony which I know is factory because she had it from card.

My Rainribbon also has curl from card, and my Sunribbon has it too but she was second hand - just by association it seems that there's a lot more hair in the EU ones, and they sometimes curl - whereas the US ones have straight, silky hair which is less densely rooted.

This year is really weird in production between regions because pretty much every set has some variation in it, either hair colour, plastic shade, texture of hair, type of plastic, colour of symbol. Most of these are made in the same place but clearly not at the same time or with the same materials.

Interestingly Starbow was I think always bluehaired in the comic so I guess I think of her that way by default. But I don't really have a favourite between the two. I think both are very pretty for different reasons.

On another note, my US one seems to have quite a bold symbol. But that could also be batch related given the number of variations :/

I think I prefer the US version. Her hair colors are the primary colors, which make more sense on a rainbow themed pony for me :) The translucent plastic does discolor easily though, and her hair can look thin. I have a scraggly one with no tail and she looks a bit sad...

Both are very cute, but I like the US version better because it goes well with her symbol. There's no purple anywhere else on her, so I think she looks more put-together with the blue.

i like blue and purple. I think the yellow in the hair stands out... it’s also not on her symbol anywhere :)

Same here!

Sunfading on this particular pony that's starting to brown, probably not... I think she's got the same issue as Starshine and batch differences in plastic.

I like them both!  But I do think I prefer the one with the blue streak.  But that just may be the necklace.

I like the blue stripe better, but I confess this is my least favorite pony in the set.

I like the European version. I think the colors are brighter and the plastic looks much nicer to me. ^^

This is one of the things I love about this community. As a US collector - I know very little about ponies released outside the US. I read this post on my lunch break at work yesterday and then went home and made it a point to look at my Baby Starbow compared to the EU version pictured here.

To answer the post, I think the one I own is my favorite (US version) but I really enjoy reading posts like this. I feel like it opens up a whole new dimension of MLP for me.
