When the scammer outright exposes their plan through Caller ID
« on: October 01, 2018, 12:34:02 PM »
Just had the most blatantly obvious scam caller today. Ironically, their caller ID came up as "ILLEGAL SCAM" and they were apparently scamming the idea of stopping robo-calls. Now I don't condone this type of behavior but isn't the whole point of the scam that you do NOT make it obvious that it's a scam? I wasn't even sure I read that right but it was clear as day. At least the other ones I've gotten weren't that blatantly clear.

That's funny!  I get calls with ID listed as, myself.   I don't answer of course, but it always makes me wonder what it would be like to talk to my own double.

What might be happening is that the robo calls are SPOOFING numbers in the local area, to disguise who they really are. It is very annoying, and I have had several calls.

I have an app which not only tells me who is calling but if enough people has marked it as spam it will say so on the caller ID and the name will be in red. If it's an ok call it will be in blue. Really handy :).

My favourite scam call still the one when my Dad picked up the phone and they asked him if he was my mother...

And the one when they called my mother and told her there was a problem with her computer. To which she calmly said, yes, I don't have one. And hung up.

That is funny though. On our phone 1471 system all you get is "the caller witheld their number".

they are entertaining at times but also annoying.

You can tell they spoof the numbers when its got a local area code or when theres a z infront of the number.

Lately weve been getting the credit card shams but my favourite ones are the computer and immigrant Canada.  Unfortunetely the last time I got one of those I really wasn't in the mood to mess around with them.  Typically ill ask how the weather is in Mumbai then to go find someone else to annoy.

I love it when my phone tells me SCAM LIKELY.

it's way better than the spoofing of local numbers.

I get so many of them here that I can pretty much predict that when the phone rings it's probably a scammer or someone else I don't want to talk to. It's been things like "your microsoft license has expired" to "free drycleaning service". I don't get actual people, though, it's just robocalls so three's no point in messing with them.

I don't answer the phone much for various reasons, but one time I was at home and everyone was out. I think we were waiting for a call from someone so I answered it and it was some kind of marketing.

And I am usually polite with my autopilot answer, but this time I was half awake for some reason my brain just had a spasm. And when they asked for whichever parent, instead of the "Who is it please? What is it about?" patter, I was like, "why?"

And there was silence.

And I go, "Erm, Who is it please?"

And they hung up.

They never called back. Their number was given and it was a nusiance number.

So no harm done.

They encountered the sleepy neighbourhood Aspie that morning, unfortunately for them ;)

And then I answer with ^I dunno....why should I say who I am, when you are to one  calling anonymous!!!!^
And then they are....^silence^...and then I hang up!!!! :-)

lol wow. the sad thing is that enough people are vulnerable to be preyed on. My new cell provider IDs certain calls as "scam likely" and I love that.

I've put call guardian on because we get at least 3 spam calls a day. However, some people are stupid enough to think we want to speak to them, the fools! I had one earlier that gave their name for the phone to pass on to me. So i spoke to Shawn for a minute. Asked if we'd had dealings with his company before? did anyone ask him to call? was he then a cold caller? we don't take calls from cold callers, bye! hang up, block number.

The annoying thing is that we have to take it off if we're expecting a call and for some reason it sends my Aunt to the answer machine even though she's on the VIP list!

eh, we need the "Scam likely" on our phone. My Dad is nowhere near as smart as me. I heard the phone ring the other day while I was in the garden and he was inside but he didn't answer in time. I came in to find him calling the number back! I've told him so many times NEVER to do that. We're just lucky it was telemarketing and wasn't one of those premium rate numbers!

My grandparents need a caller ID like that. My grandfather phoned us the other day to tell us he'd won a load of money on the Melbourne postcode lottery (he lives in the UK, by the way, and has never been to Melbourne in his life), and he just had to call this number to claim it....we managed to dissuade him, but he says he is keeping the number 'just in case'. Just insane. I never realised before that anyone actually falls for these scams!

We get so many cold callers on our home phone that we always have the answerphone on, much to the bafflement of anyone who phones up for a legitimate reason.

We kept getting scam calls on our telephone about eight years ago. My mum got fed up and answered the phone and said in a child's voice "My mummy and daddy left me", they didn't call again; I was cracking up with laughter.

I had one on my mobile phone once, I answered it but put my phone up to my laptop and had Goku screaming down the phone.
