Dollyhair doesn't match original ponies?
« on: September 27, 2018, 05:59:18 PM »
A while back I had to do some partial rehairs on ponies that were missing forelocks and tails. I ordered Hanks of the hair that Dollyhair.com said we're a match, however compared to the original hair of the ponies, they look slightly different.

I bought Automic Turquoise for Bubbles, and it's darker than the rest of her hair.
I then got Heartthrob for Sweet Tooth, and this color seems too vibrant or dark compared to the rest of her hair.

Is this due to fading, or are the colors on Dollyhair incorrect? If so, which colors do these ponies really need?

30+ year old hair rarely looks exactly like new, unfortunately.  It's just a fact of material science that colours fade with age, and manufacturing ingredients / formulae can also change.  Sometimes because certain raw materials become too expensive, or due to regulatory requirements.  Other times it's a lack of QA.  Dollyhair colours rarely are a perfect match in my experience to vintage G1's.

Just this.

If you are going to hair it's just better to reroot the entire color, in my experience.

Some of the colours are way off. like daquri ice it use to be a light blue colour but now is a light green, the factory has changed up some of the colours but dollyhsir doesn't always update these changes

Dollyhair advertises itself as using the same source as "real" ponies, but it doesn't.  (At least not the same as G1 ponies.  IMO it's not the same as G3s either.)  As the original hair producer was a small Italian owned company that shut up shop in the late 80s.

So while some hair colors may be close to G1 pony hair, none of it is truly "identical".  (Doesn't have as much body and bounce as genuine G1 hair either.)
