Kids of a certain age are fascinated by "gross" stuff, and anything taboo, and by parodies (because they've just got to the point where they get what parody is.)    In the 80s the big "gross out" franchises were Garbage Pail Kids and Madballs.  Kids are into that stuff for a year or two and then outgrow it.

About people buying pets based on shows . . . after Finding Nemo a lot of kids begged their parents for clown fish, which blows my mind because the entire movie is about how Nemo hates being in the aquarium.  Literally has the line "Fish weren't made to live in a box" in the show!

Ooh, so that's where that bottle of 'Chasmell' came from. We have a bottle of it at work, randomly behind the counter (guessing a customer opened one? It was there before I started).

And there is definitely an increase in the number of poop toys. We have 6(!) board games dedicated to poop. 3 doggy games, and 3 other. Lots of poop blind bag toys and squishies. That's much more than usual.

Seeing the answers in this thread... what if we suddenly got new G1 replicas with a poop gimmick instead of scented? Would you still buy them?
Like a pooping Mimic. Press her bum and brown slime shoots out. Come on, Hasbro! Hop on the trend!

Aw man, now I can't get that frightening image out of my head

I heard a lot of kids flushed their still living fish down the toilet because the movie said "all drains lead to the ocean" so the poor kids thought that their fish would be okay and end up in the ocean.

So, one day after mentioning Madballs I was at a toy store in the mall and I turn around and . . . Madballs.  THEY ARE STILL MAKING MADBALLS.   I had no idea.

Also the Grossery Gang (the 'gross' parody of Shopkins) has PLAYSETS??  Like, the dude at the toy shop showed me a t-rex toy that the Grossery Gang are supposed to ride or something.  I had no idea they were so elaborate.

Late to this topic, but I agree with anyone saying that this trend is very odd. My childhood years are long past me now, but I don't think I would have ever found any of this to be all of that amusing.

I was at work and saw this candy dispenser that is shaped like those poop emojis and it actually says it "poops" out candy. I was so like "Who would buy this? What are they even thinking these days?"

The fact that the poop emoji ever became a thing in products to begin with is a mystery to me. Strange days we're living in.

If I had to say the one thing that makes me raise an eyebrow the most, it's this game. Just. Look at those drawings.

Two observations: That game, the poop really should not be in the bath, people. That's not where poop should be, even before you get to the problem of fishing poop.

Second. Thank goodness Zapper isn't working for Basic Fun or Hasbro. *shudders at pooping ponies*. As if DnW babies aren't bad enough (thankfully in G1 the UK comic moved well away from that gimmick and made it more about their panties getting patterns on them when they splashed them in puddles and stuff...)

I wish the US would have made the Drink n Wets more about the diapers getting designs on them when they went through puddles instead of marketing them as the ponies actually wetting the diapers.

I thought of this thread when I saw an advertisement for a Hot Potato game but instead of throwing a ball or stuffed potato the players throw a rainbow poop toy.

Walmart has two singing/dancing poop toys.  One is brown and sings "You Can't Touch This"-MC Hammer song with words rewritten to be about touching poop-and the other is rainbow and sings Christmas songs like "We Wish You a Poopy Christmas."  I really wish I was making this stuff up.

Not a fan of the feces-themed merchandise trend. I honestly don't find it cute...

So yesterday I saw something that IMO tops the poop toys in terms of grossness:  a game with a 3-D model head (think "Operation" except 3-D head instead of a 2-D man) on which you . . . pop pimples!

I almost took a picture but then decided to spare you guys. :P
