G3’s most sought after ponies?
« on: August 07, 2018, 03:05:18 AM »
I am the first to admit, I don’t know that much about G3s. I don’t collect them, but I do have a couple of them. Most are still sitting in a plastic bin to be honest. I did use to pick them up at thrift stores and fleamarkets, but since it is so difficult to sell and/trade them these days I stopped doing that- I don’t have room for them :( I still *might* pick up one if I like it enough to keep it for myself- after all, they are ponies. They are adorable :P

Looking through the brag forum got me thinking though. There are a lot of you collecting G3, and I am sure there are ponies that are more sought after than others. I am a big “bring the ponies back to collectors” - kind of girl, so I thought I should ask you all:

Which G3 ponies are most sought after?

I'm no G3 expert, but I heard the unicorns and pegasi in general are quite sought after, for they made very few of them during G3

I'm new to collecting MLP, so I can't really answer your question. But I have been collecting mostly just G3 so far and the ponies I tend to see most often on Ebay are Pinkie Pie, Sparkleworks, Rainbow Dash, and Petal Blossom, so I'm guessing those ones are probably not as much in demand.

I believe it would be the ones that came in sets.
For example, Pink Sunsparkle was only available for a long time in that pesky huge set.
Kimono in her original pose is still in demand!

However, I think its think its random releases like the winter babies, Bay breeze, and that royal set OMG!

Thanks everyone!

What about more “unusal” colors such as Anchors Away, Seaspray, Kiwi Tart etc?

The international and convention exclusives , for sure.  The ones that weren't sold in the USA...

The Euro Exclusives (Winter Snow is the 1st one I can think of), the fair exclusives, and maybe Silver Rain (The blue and white ombre pony)

Pink Sunsparkle is actually really common.

Winter, spring, Halloween, Valentine's Day, etc. Holiday ponies are the most popular sets. Also Caribbean Delight (white pony with bright hair), Super long hair ponies, Portobella (white pony with mushroom symbol), Snow'el 2 (white pegasus)  and of course unicorns and pegasi.

That's just off the top of my head.

Earth Ponies:
Port-o-bella. Especially with her hat.
Winter Snow
Charity Ponies. Particularly Ribbons and Hearts and Rosey Posey.
The Holiday Ponies. I've noticed that the prices on Pumpkin Tart and Abracadabra soar around Halloween.
Fair, Art and Con Ponies
Waterfire is popular
Marshmallow Cocoa
Love Letter
Anchors Away
Autumn Skye
Blank Pony
Carribean Delight
I think Lickety-Split might be?

Pegasus:
Styling Starcatcher
Thistle Whistle
Cloud Climber
Snow 'El
Coconut Grove

Unicorns:
Styling Cheerilee
Intact Lily Lightly
Sunrise Song
Styling Rarity

I don't know which Breezies are HSA. But I'm sure other people do.

Pegasi Aurora Mist? Or is that just me? She seems to go for higher prices on ebay.

Nope. Those are just extremely common. Highly Sought After mostly refers to a pony that is any combo of popular, hard to find, exclusive release,  pricey. There are exceptions to some of those. And all things considered, G3 is relatively cheap compared to some of the triple digit price tags g1s can go for.  Even MiB G3 ponies and playsets can have fairly reasonable prices.

The most sought-after ones that I have noticed are ones that have limited-release variants, store exclusives, store exclusives that were released only once, released only in certain countries or just have fairly fantastic appeal.

This is from my personal experience:

Anchor's Away, for instance, was only available in a set that was sold at Costco. That store was few and far between in most of the US back in the early 2000s so she is fairly rare as a US release. Toys R Us, on the other hand, was EVERYWHERE, so TrU exclusives are only more popular now since the company is slowly disappearing.

Snow'el, the white pegasus, has a symbol type that is fairly rare in all generations of MLP. It's an angel which inspires a different kind of appeal, and even Angel from G1 was based on a fish.

Winter Minty is middle-of-the-road. She was released a bunch, but this specific release is a style and pose that was not repetitively replicated.

Rainbow Bubbles, Snowdrop Swirl, Rainbow Treat and Royal Beauty were all Euro exclusives, and the Super Long Hair line has very limited inventory of ponies, so there is the aesthetic appeal for those. Rainbow Bubbles and Snowdrop Swirl, though, are just... strange. The cutiemarks are tea-themed (as a silly American I can see the intrigue, being Euro ponies and all) with displaced names. They are very strange specimens, so that adds more to the appeal.

Waterfire is unique in color, theme, type and set so she has her own following. If there were more "harsh" color contrasts then it would be up in the air if she would have as much of a following. If there were one that was Kelly green and yellow I could see that pony having her own following, too.

Port-o-Bella is just a pleasure from the set she was part of to name to color to breed and was a limited release... Just the entire theme she was part of is amazing. She is unique AND well-themed. She's not necessarily super-rare, though- just super-liked.

Then there are the mail-order ponies, but they are only wanted because they were exclusives, not because they are necessarily "rare" or hard to find unlike the charity ponies that were not released in stores.

On the contrary, Pinkie Pie has so many dumb incarnations that it impacted even her "hard to find" releases. **shrug**

Pegasi Aurora Mist? Or is that just me? She seems to go for higher prices on ebay.

Yes, her and Windy Wisp, because they are the only jewel Pegasi that were sold singly. Hidden Treasure runs right behind them.

I dont think G3 apperaed much in Norway(atleast in my area) I didn't learn about before a friend bought me a vhs from England with the cartoon on it that we were past G2. And when G4 came around then I found a G3 pony, well a small one of Pinkie Pie holding a cake.
