Tech help! Best way to email large amounts of photos?
« on: July 22, 2018, 12:59:26 PM »
A couple weeks ago I went to ND for a family reunion. I was there for 8 days and took about 2,000 pictures.  Not all of those are from the actual reunion, but I still have over 200 pictures from that alone.

I have people that have requested copies of my pictures. But all the pictures they want are far too big to fit in one email. I can't even put the two videos that I took of my 92 year old great uncle singing and playing the trombone in an email because each file is too big on it's own.

Normally, when I want to share large amounts of photos (like after I go to a convention) I use Flickr. But these are private family photos, many include children. I don't want them out on the internet. I don't even want to put those videos of my great uncle on YouTube.

I remember Photobucket (back when I used it) allowed you to make folders private or locked with a password. Does Flickr do that? I'm not even sure if that would work though. The people I need to send the pictures to are... of an older generation. They're NOT that tech savvy.  :lookround: That might be too complicated for them.

Right now, my options seems to be either send about a 100 emails with 4-6 pictures in each one. Or buy some cheap flash drives and snail mail the pictures. Or is there another option that I'm missing?

I haven't done it but I believe you can share MANY pictures through google drive...

If you are sticking to e-mail -- some artists I work with send their 2+gig files through dropbox / box / wetransfer etc...

Last time I tried to send something through dropbox, the person on the other end couldn't access it.

What about box or wetransfer?

I've never heard of those. Does the other person need an account to access the files?

I don't believe so. I didn't have to log into accounts when I received files from artists. I just clicked a link to receive it.

-_- I'm looking at it now and realize that box might be for corporations. We had a corporate account. :/ So that won't help you out.

But https://wetransfer.com/ should be ok...

we've also received files https://www.mailbigfile.com/ that way too.

I'll look into those in a while. Right now I'm hopping back and forth between here and editing pictures. As long as simple enough for a 70 year old to use, it sounds like it should work.

If you have photoshop, you could make a batch action to resize them.

If I recall right the receiver just has to click the link -- hit the a download button (I don't think it's tricky with spam or anything like that)... and it'll go into whatever folder they have designated for their downloads.

They'll need to know where things download.
How to unzip something (assuming you zip it, so multiple files send in one go).
And how to open it on their computer.

So it could be kind of tricky, but it isn't THAT tricky.

Seconding Google Drive / Dropbox.  That's too many files to comfortably handle via e-mail.

Whichever you use, make sure you have the file set up to be publicly accessible or shared.  By default Dropbox stuff is private, same with Drive I believe.

Do you have WinZip? It compresses the files for email and you can "uncompressed" them at the other end. Other than that I can only think of sharing online via OneDrive or similar.

I sent the videos of my great uncle using Wet Transfer. I'll see if they can download it ok before I send the pictures.

Thanks for all your help!

I'll add that to the list of things to try if Wet Transfer doesn't work.

Zipping files will compress them, however they won't compress them that much. This won't really help the issue at hand. (my 95 MB folder full of jpgs compresses into 85.5MB)

That said, You can right click / option click on windows / macs to compress and zip files. You shouldn't need a program for it.

It's useful for sharing a group of files.

I'd second either Dropbox or Google Drive. I've used or received from both and are simple to use.
