I'm putting this in off-topic doe to its wildly speculative nature.

So, we know we have Apple Jack, who is either named after the cereal...or hopefully the liquor because that's funnier.  So naming ponies after products is nothing too unusual for the early days of MLP.

But then we have Minty.  Who has clovers on her butt.  Ok.  She's mint green.  So Minty I guess.

But I posit there's another reason.

What is, yes, minty.  Pale green, and associated with clovers that are sometimes called shamrocks and were definitely around in 1981-1982?

Shamrock Shakes.

I think Minty is named after Shamrock Shakes.  And I find that delightful.

I'd guess that most if not all of the ponies were named before they got their symbols.  There was a very early set of prototypes of the original six where they all have dapples, like Cotton Candy.  Can't remember if their names were announced in the same promotional images or not, but it's not a stretch to imagine they were all named after their colours, and the symbols are known to have come later.  Makes sense given how tenuous most of the connections are.  Cotton Candy's symbol doesn't look like cotton candy, Minty has shamrocks, Bluebelle has stars rather than the flower you'd expect, etc.  Only Blossom really makes sense.

Horses eat clover... it seemed a perfectly good equestrian reason to use the symbol as Baby Sugarberry said.

Guys, this was supposed to be fun.  Not logical.

The original pony designs were actual pony colors anyway, not pastels, marketing did that.

Only Cotton Candy's symbol was really part of that crowd.

That'd be cute, then Minty and Fizzy could hang out more in retro diners! What flavor is a shamrock shake anyway? I'd assume it's supposed to be...Minty?

It's some combination of mint and vanilla.  It's really strange.

Yes, I want the comic where Minty and Fizzy hang out in retro diners.

Along with So Soft Fifi, wearing her poodle skirts.

I never thought of that! Quite a funny coincidence if you ask me.
And I too want to see minty, fizzy and Fifi (with a cute little poodle skirt) hanging out in an old diner. Hold on. Once I get my pencils, I’m sure as heck gonna try to draw this!

Do you have a picture of those?

I do not - someone on the Arena has Cotton Candy and .... I want to say Bluebelle?  I remember them showing off the white paint on their hooves, and the promo image that has (presumably the same ponies) displayed on a white tiered stand.

They're not painted-painted, there's some white paint residue on the bottom of their hooves.  Presumably because they stood so long on that display stand, were glued down, or were placed there while the paint was still slightly tacky.

Here's the old thread about proto-Bluebelle.

I think the art for the collector ponies depicts all of them with CC's symbol, too.

The original commercial also shows the prototype ponies with the same symbol as Cotton Candy. This is a pic of the Blossom featured in the commercial.
