Rit dye: what am I doing wrong?
« on: July 10, 2018, 01:03:16 PM »
I have never dyed a pony or pony hair before. I got HQG1C Frost and tried using powder Rit dye in black. I used vinegar and liquid detergent and followed the instructions for bucket/stove top, but when I rinsed it, it all came out! :(

What am I doing wrong? How do I dye a pony's hair?

I use Rit powder dye for fabric and plastic to dye nylon hair :) I mix up a small amount in a jam jar and it can be reused quite a number of times :)

Personally I've only had success dyeing a pony once, the rest of the time it's not worked very well for me. I was dyeing vintage ponies though.

Hopefully someone can help you more than me.

Although people have had success with rit dye before for ponies, it is made for fabric first and foremost.  Rit dyemore, on the other hand, is made for plastics and nylon.  I recommend getting it in graphite, as i’ve used rit dyemore in that color before to dye many dolls to an absolute dark black, and it would probably be perfect for ponies.

That is SO helpful! I just read up on the difference between the two and which each will dye.

I believe that pony has polypropylene hair, not nylon. Polypropylene doesn't take dye very well.

Why would they make a pony specifically for customs and make the hair not very dye-friendly?
