Opinion on Spike (Both G1, G3, and G4)

Duuuude, it gets worse if you read this one FIM comic (which I want to say was a Humble Bundle exclusive) where it was like "Hey guys, here's an explanation for why Twilight Sparkle couldn't make any friends at school:  too busy taking care of an infant dragon while trying to also keep up with her schoolwork!"

I'm normally a big fan of the G4 comics, but this one I was like "Oh my God.  You realize this makes Princess Celestia, Twilight's parents, and basically every adult she comes across seem horrible, right?"

I don't remember how this is addressed in the show, or if it is.  The show does have slightly different canon than the comics.

Wow. I haven’t read a lot of the FIM comics but making it sound like Twilight is being forced to take care of an infant Spike with no help from her parents or Princess Celestia ...come to think of it isn’t there a newborn Spike plush?

I’m under the impression in the show that dragons mature at a different rate than ponies so although Spike is younger than Twilight he’s far enough advanced in dragon years to be able to be her companion and assistant. I was happy to see him grow up a little in a recent episode.

At least G1 Spike (presumably) chose to stay with the Ponies because they treated him better than Tirac, though you'd think he'd have gone with his buddy Scorpan instead...

I like to think that Scorpan left Spike with the ponies while he rebuilt his kingdom but it took longer than Scorpan thought it would to restore the kingdom so that’s why Spike stayed so long. However, he and Scorpan remained friends and they visited each other from time to time.

When Rescue at Midnight Castle was being scripted/produced I don't think Hasbro was thinking of making another My Little Pony special at the time which is why we're left with unanswered questions regarding Scorpan.

I also like that Spike is the only creature besides Baby Ember that wasn’t tranformed in someway by the Rainbow of Darkness. Was Spike too small to be useful or was Tirac keeping Spike as he was to make sure Scorpan followed his orders?

ooooh, I like this idea. Tirac definitely strikes me as the kind of person that'd use Spike to keep Scorpan "in line". That's a really interesting idea, dang.

Tirac strikes me that way too and what better way to keep Scorpan under his control than to make sure Spike's well being was at stake if Scorpan didn't obey Tirac?
 
We see a little of that when Tirac threatens to behead Spike if Scorpan doesn’t bring him a 4th pony by midnight but  I think it's possible that Tirac often threanted Scorpan with Spike.

G1 Spike was okay. Not a big fan of the voice, but some of his child-like demeanor can be charming.

G3 Spike was interesting, and I like his design. I do wish we got more of him.

G4 Spike has a rather mixed portrayal. I really like him, but I wonder if a lot of that is just out of pity. I feel like he gets the short end of the stick a few too many times.

For anyone asking about how the whole infant Spike thing was addressed in the G4 show, it goes like this.
Twilight had to pass an exam to get into Celestia's school for gifted unicorns. Her task was to hatch the dragon egg (spike). Twilight eventually hatched it thanks to the sonic rainboom and thus Spike was hatched...and then Twilight couldn't control her magic and hijinks happen until Celestia calms her down.
According to the show, she couldn't make friends because she was way too focused on her studies. It says nothing about the whole nursing Spike thing and doing her studies. The comics are second cannon meaning they're cannon unless the show writes over it. That's why there's a Moondancer in the comic and a Moondancer in the show who are both obviously different.
However, this does have some negative implications. Where did they get Spike's egg? Did they just steal it from his parents being like "oh yeah she probably won't pass so we can give you your son back" or was Spike an orphan? What would've happened if Twilight couldn't have opened Spike's egg? If she opened it too early would she have risked Spike not being fully developed?

With every set of answers a new set of questions arises.

and yes, I know dragons don't care about their hatchlings at  a certain age, but I'm sure they'd still care when their son was still in his egg.

Yeah G1 Spike isn't the best singer in the universe, but honestly if you pitch the song down it sounds a lot better. They even harmonize at the end! I mean at least the song shows Spike cares about Baby Lickety and doesn't want her to get lost or hurt...even if Baby Lickety was being a diva. 
I wouldn't judge G1Spike as a character by his singing.

The Jem fan in me finds the conversation about Spike singing to be hilarious, given that in Jem Charlie Adler voices the Misfits' manager, Eric - and the idea of him singing anything...well, let's just say he'd probably need to be considerably inebriated even to consider it...
