Where would you start?
By year?
Colour?
Set?
Generation?

Hmm...gosh I don’t know. I kinda started with g4 for my current collection of cross generational ponies. But if I had to start again from square one... I think I’d start with colour. I like space themed ponies, so it would be a logical place to start. I tried collecting only certain ponies for some time, but it didn’t last too long. Not time for logic when one has ponies!

I'd go straight for whatever really caught my eye first, and then fill in any holes later.  I collect A LOT of different things, and that's how all my collections start.  I find one thing that catches my eye, it leads me to look for more. Then I just pick up what I like as I find it during my searches.  Later, if the collection turns serious, I go for sets, and branch out to other sub-collections.

So whatever catches my eye is my priority.  And any good bargains I come across in my searches too:p  I'll generally ignore anything that I'm lukewarm on until the collection gets big enough that I'm starting to have a hard time finding new stuff to get, or I find a particularly good bargain for something that I know I'll want later.

I probably wouldn’t start!  It’s not a cheap hobby, anymore!  Ponies for a quarter, anyone?

Probably by getting my favorites of the ones I have right now. Or thrifting, thrifting has been how I've gotten a large amount of my collection anyway.

Well, I've always gone for white ponies, especially gen 1, and that wouldn't change if I had to start anew.

100% agreed - even just a few years ago, I'd be able to pick up a pony for a nice treat or a reward for having achieved something, nowadays getting a pony is something that has to be considered a lot more because of the prices of some of them!

If I were starting over though, I'd probably set myself a theme, like weather or space-themed ponies.

I would go about it exactly as I have done now:

1. replace lost childhood herd
2. obtain all ponies who I wanted desperately as a child but never even touched
3. any other pony who brings joy

I have no 'theme' and I have no need to complete sets except for what I mentioned above. So for example I will buy the princess ponies whom I love, but do not have to complete the set. However because I so wanted TE ponies as a child and never got to even hold one I do want to have them all one day. This makes sense to me in my own special way even if it does not to anyone else  ^.^

This being said, I am in full agreement with regards to the increase in pony prices.

I'd probably do a similar method as I'm doing now, since I'd be the same person; go by whatever grabs my eye, and is the cheapest. :P I miss buying BIG honkin' lots from eBay and needing every single pony in the lot! Nowadays, I'm lucky if I can find a lot under $300 that has more than a handful I still need.

Exactly this for me too. Except I’d be smarter as a thirteen year old and not get rid of my childhood herd in the first place!

I'd do the exact same thing, except I wouldn't sell off my Shy Pose Army. It took me three years to realize that was a bad move on my part. Now I know I won't ever get some of those ponies again and it hurts my heart a little bit.

By theme, totally. Ocean themed, bird themed. Maybe by pose, too.

Yeeps. That's a hard question since I don't even remember 'starting'...I haad ponies from the age of 2 and I never sold them :/

If talking about online and second hand collecting though...I think, knowing my personality, I'd probably do it in a disorganised and impulse manner, buying whatever I found at second hand sales and then randomly buying lots on ebay irrespective of the ponies...

Between 1995 and 1998, when we were online at home, my collection basically consisted of whatever turned up at carboot sales as I didn't know of any other resource, really. And although I began arranging my first online trade in 1997, it didn't manifest till 1998 and was a highly unrealistic trade in the modern sense since in that time we'd amassed about 100 UK release duplicates and she brought about the same number of mostly US release ponies to trade with us.

So many of the mundane collection gaps, and some of the rarer ones like Crumpet, Munchy, Mimic, etc were settled before I even really knew they were rare.

I genuinely think I'd have no clue how to do it now from scratch. Maybe I just wouldn't. :/ I am not so much of an obsessive completionist with collections I began as an adult. G1 MLP is the only one I feel like that about, because it was  part of my childhood...

If I had to start over, I'd stick with G1's and strictly MOC's/MIB/MIP.
