I stumbled across this article in The Sun, which I believe is a UK tabloid?

https://www.thesun.co.uk/money/5539532/my-little-pony-toy-worth/

It's about how some vintage ponies are worth a lot of $$$, so if UKers saw a sudden jump in the prices of starting bids in February . . . this might be why!  XD

The phrasing in places was really entertaining.

"Even though the [MOC Nurse pony's] packaging was in German, it still attracted 18 bidders."  Like, for all they know the bidders were German.

"The peach coloured Ladybird toy has little painted insects on her hind making her a collectable [sic]."  Yep, that's why she's rare, BECAUSE OF the insects.

I think The Sun has always been known to be questionable at best but YIKES. How come the symbols make the pony expensive but not the fact that she's Greek? Now people will be trying to list plain ol' US Baby Moondancers for that price...

Well, I guess somebody didn’t fully research their topic before publishing the article.

Where to even begin with this.

The Sun is one of the most...ugly...newspapers in our country. I think at present it's only beaten by the Mail for obvious reasons of hostile content - but it is...a really...icky...paper. Though the fact it's used "foreign" ebays to research this article is somewhat surprising :)

"even though it's in German" xD xD XD. Pro-Brexit Paper - cannot compute foreign languages :D

Also, they fail to mention that all their (note, they're pink) price tagged ponies are not ponies sold in the UK, thus unlikely to be in the childhood collections of most UK children.

P.S That nurse pony is pretty. Naynie had that one from new, so I did see her carded once... but she had her as a kid and yeah. My sister's speed decarding as a kid (grab, rip, play) means I don't really remember seeing her like that for long ;)

P.P.S I just realised that according to the article, "El Graco" (SIC) is the only 'foreign' maker licenced by Hasbro.

So all other Nirvana ponies are fakies. And Hasbro is now good and British. None of that foreign stuff here. >.>

TBH, I know the article is overkill, but I'd rather people put their ponies on ebay instead of tossing them thinking they are trash.

But it made me go check out the highest recently sold pony prices...

@Sapphire Rain - Baby Moondancer wasn't sold here, so the chances of people having her is unlikely too ;)

Though I think I have one in my trade box. I wonder if the Sun would like to buy it for a bargain £150. Because you know, it's not pink...

Wow, that's ridiculous. This is like when people claim beanie babies are rare, but most of them sell for less than original retail value.

Wow, this is obnoxious. I'm sure this will give reason for non-collector sellers to up some of their already outrageous prices. :c

I like they specifically label baby moondancer as greek baby moondancer, but go forth and say she's rare because of her symbol. Yikes.

Oh yay, time for the overpriced common ponies on eBay to become even more of an issue....

I saw some listed for $200-5000 on ebay recently. Ones that sell for less than $12 MAXIMUM. Also reminds me of someone I saw selling a fakie for $30 because she thought it was rare due to the lack of information online about her.

There is someone over here selling a lot of fakies persistently for about £100 (it was higher) under the MLP banner as well. Fakies are even more common at second hand sales at the moment and a lot of dealers are also inundated with them, demonstrating they don't bother to know the difference.

I messaged that guy to tell him he was selling a load of fake ponies and nobody would buy them - I even told him which ones were real and he was very nice but clearly he thinks his lot is worth something as he still has it priced ridiculously high!
