Lets talk about the Pokemon from the Gold/Silver Demo
« on: June 02, 2018, 09:11:37 PM »
Ok everyone who is into Pokemon should have by now heard about the demo leaks for Pokemon Gold/Silver.

I'm looking at this list of the Pokemon and thinking "Man why didn't we get a fire bear?" or "Why didn't we get some of those baby Pokemon!?"

I think a lot of the designs were interesting and some of them were kind of "What in the blue blazes is THAT?!"

Which ones do you wish were in the game that never made it or never had a redesign for later?

Yes!!! I had a look through that spreadsheet, but it was very quick.

You have to wonder who leaked it though? Apparently it was an anonymous user...

I loved seeing how the sprites changed. I've been trying to keep in mind that some were placeholders, but some are... odd. Like Caterpie, for example.

I'm kinda glad Girafirig was made less creepy. It's pre-evolution was a bit creepy too!

All three Kanto starters being in the intro explains why just Charizard is in the final release!

Also, after the intro finished, a Pikachu minigame would play where you would catch music notes!

I hope people can translate it and get past the thing that has blocked off the rest of the game.

It really makes you think though... what other betas and unreleased Pokemon do we not know about?

Oh yes, Girafirig... Thankfully they didn't go with the route they designed in the first place.. also it's pre-evo made me think of the Gastly line..
One of the YouTubers I follow is trying to play through the demo... apparently there was supposed to be an aquarium and the safari zone.

From what I heard from other YouTuber is that one of the articles says Joto was supposed to be a lot bigger than what we got.
I kind of wish they had kept Noctowl's design (but gave it two legs visible at the very least)

Glad they didn't do Animon either XD

I agree. Girafarig just looks creepy. I’m glad they redeveloped it. Kinda wonder what those scrapped, never made it into the game Pokémon were supposed to be. I used some of my knowledge from Japanese class to see what I could gather about the scrapped ones, (please excuse any errors. Fonts like that are somewhat difficult to read, and I am a beginner) and in order their names are:

Rinrin, evolving into berinrin. Possible reference to the large bells they both have?
Kotara, evolving into raitora. Seems like a somewhat pikachu looking Pokémon, so the rai part might be from the Japanese word for thunder.
Sorowara (I think), evolving into kyonpon. Not entirely sure where that came from
Urifun, evolving into waarifu. Again, not sure on the origins of that one.
The Pokédex looking entry below I can’t quite translate. Give me a bit of time, and I’ll get back on that one, and see what else I can pick out.
This. Sentence. Is. False! Dontthinkaboutitdontthinkaboutit.

The spreadsheet I'm looking at has translated name (not sure if they are accurate) but the English names for Kotara and Raitora are Tigrette and Electiger (they both look like some sort of tiger mouse hybrids XD). It's quite possible that this line was an early design for a later Pokemon line.

Rinrin (Rinring) and Berurun (Bellboyant) may have been redesigned into Purrloin and Liepard but who knows on that one!

Urifun and Waarifu, I think the spreadsheet I have calls them Urufuman (Wolfman) and Wa-urufu (Warwolf) says they may have been early concepts for Swinub's line or Snover's line

Sorowara took me a moment to locate on the spreadsheet because the name is actually different XD I had to find Kyonpon lol. They named Sorowara as Norowara (Kurstraw) and Kyonpon as Kyonpan (Pangshi). They don't have what those two seem to come from other than Kyonpan is a panda of some sort and Norowara is some sort of cursed doll. My guess this is would have likely been an early concept of the later used Shuppet line

I think my favorites of the alpha pokemon are the middle evolution of Happa/chickorita. It just doesn't make any sense at all looking the way it does, but I want to think it's a possible prototype for the flabebe line.
Another one I like, and I can completely see why they didn't go for it is the twin ghosts pokemon that are before Girafarig coincidentally. They look way too close to Gastly, but I can't help but love them anyway. Maybe if they were in the games, they'd get an ability when G3 rolled around where sometimes they'd do more damage by chance because they're working together instead of fighting with each other, but also have a slightly lower chance to do 1/2 damage because of the opposite.
But by far, my most favorite alpha pokemon is Dandemew, or proto-hoppip. It's part cat, part flower, ALL ADORABLE!

I don't know their names but I love the little fat round tiger pokemon, I really wish they made it to the final cut because they would be some of my favourite pokemon!
I love the Porygon-2 prototype too!
I just love round pokemon :P

I think most people who played Secret of Mana would agree that the concept of the Hoppip seemed to be inspired by the Rabbite XD (and I still want to add a t to Hoppip)

I actually realllly like old girafarig. It made the name make more sense, and I love the evil side much better than the tail we have right now.

I'm wondering how it would walk or more importantly, how would it go to the bathroom XD

I wish baby Growlithe, Meowth, Vulpix and Ponyta were real! Why did they scrap those?!

Electiger looks very goofy but I'd love to see him in the gams too.

So someone compiled some great fanart that is very similar looking to Sugimori and put it altogether and I thought I'd share.

The one that I really wish were real is the proto-Raikou. TBH, I've never been a big fan of that legendary trio as they turned out. They're all quite over-designed when I set aside nostalgia.

You and me both with the baby versions of those 4. At least with Growlithe and Vulpix as they are some of the more popular Gen 1 pokemon

Oh man that is very cool! I would love to have that as a poster!

I too wonder this...y’know, probably the same way as catdog. Or it just has no need to...no. It’s living, it eats, it must need a bathroom...why is thinking about Pokémon so hard?!

I like the two-headed Girafarig too - it would make such a groovy plush! :D
The unused water Pokemon designs are really nice as well; that little frilly-looking manta ray is completely sublime and I love it.
