Naming children after ponies? (Especially sons?)
« on: April 25, 2018, 07:59:40 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has used My Little Pony as inspiration for naming their own child? I assume at least a few of us have and I'd love to hear them!  ^.^

I would like to have a daughter some day, I've already picked out her name ~ Penelope Rose.

But my dilemma is what if I have a boy? I'd still like to have a pony inspired name, but none of the G1 big brothers have anything appropriate. Do they have names in other countries, or does G2/G3 have anything traditionally masculine to offer?

I won't be having kids for a few years yet, plenty of time for inspiration. :P

Not a good idea, considering there's not much to work with for boys. Flower names you can pass off, but whatcha gonna call a boy? Steamer? Chief?

I named my dog Brandy, but that's as close as I got.

Someone should name their kid Floater or Alphabittle:p

G2 has Teddy and Rocky. They're not great, but they're at least acceptable.

G4 might have something for you:

If you named your son Danny, it could be an MLP inspired name just not a pony one.

As far as an actual pony's name, Frisco could work. Or Jack inspired by Apple Jack. The name Angel is unisex, so it could go either way. Other ideas: Edgar, Buzz (inspired by Buzzer), Jeb (inspired by Jebber), Sunny, D.J., Chuck (inspired by Chuck E. Cheese), and Billie

Abasca & Spotted Slug both have kids with pony names! :D
They do slide towards the more common side of things, but the names are Eve & Ember respectively.

I can't wait for my child Alphabittle!

:snicker: I guess you could call him Alphie as a nickname. I forgot about Teddy.

I can't wait for my child Alphabittle!

The scary thing is that you might not be joking ;)

Italy used a lot of human names for some of their pony releases, male and female. I remember either Nibbles or Dibbles is Filiberto ;)

X-eevee's daughter is named Lily after the flutter pony.  She got the pony MIB around the time she was born I believe.  For her first birthday I painted a canvas with Lily on it. She told me that if they had a boy he would be DJ after the Dance n Prance pony.

Spike hasn't be mentioned yet.

A lot of "normal" names have meaning behind them. Like Peter = stone...

So if you want Gusty. Well that's sort of like wind... So look up names that have wind:

Chief

Frisco is a cheap brand of coffee over here, so that might be an interesting choice? But no, we missed that golden opportunity and didn't name our kids after ponies. Silly us!

I'd go with using pony names as a nickname, but maybe the birth cert has a really similar one as other people are suggesting...

My daughter middle name is Lily named after the flutter pony and my great grandmother. I dont mind like tailrustedleaf said about using the pony name as a nickname or maybe a middle name would be ok too.

I would only name a kid after a pony if the name didn't sound too . . . well . . . weird.  Like Lily is fine. Penelope Rose is lovely.  Even names like Galaxy can pass as just slightly 'new age' names. But a kid named"Gusty" is going to be the butt of fart jokes.  And if the other kids figure out the kid is named after a plastic horse, the teasing is just going to intensify.  (I do love the idea of looking up names that mean "wind" to reference Gusty, that's a really cool idea.)

I mean, some kids will tease no matter what, but why hand them a load of ammo?

To me it seems like a kid named after a pony might end up resenting MLPs if it brings them negative attention.  Like how the real Christopher Robin grew to hate the Winnie-the-Pooh books because he was so savagely teased over them in school.

I would name a pet after a pony instead for the more "obviously" pony names like Gusty, Wind Whistler, Strawberry Scoops, etc.

IIRC Bow-Tie's Italian name is "Timmy", pretty sure other Italian ponies have more 'everyday' names too. That might be something to look into.

Uhm. Thinking about it...
:) Gusty is a cute nickname for August/Augusta.
