Very Serious Question
« on: April 23, 2018, 09:45:00 PM »
I read somewhere that at one point some users (not going to name who because I have no idea who it was) purposely cut off hair of rare ponies just to spite everyone. Is that true? And if so, does anyone know if the ponies turned out okay in the end? I don't need information on the people who did it, I don't care about that, I just want to make sure that this terrible event didn't actually happen and if it did, were the ponies involved okay...

I've never heard of it, but while it isn't something I'd do myself, no reason to lose sleep over such a thing either.  Ponies are toys, they have no feelings and everyone is free to do with their belongings as they wish in the end.  Seems too silly to be fact, I mean who are you hurting by damaging a pony except yourself, since it's yours?

I don't think most people would do that and if someone actually did...yikes. Talk about drama queen (king?).
I'm one of those that doesn't think there's anything wrong with wanting attention or trying to get it but get a grip people! Destroying your possessions just to spite others is simply immature.

I've never heard anything like that and I've been around, like, 100 years.
Do message me with names though, as that's a pretty nasty rumour to be spreading about!

:what:

I saw similar events a few times on Neopets (turning a rare expensive discontinued pet into a cheap common one) and their motivation was often to see people get upset about something that isn't important in the long run. And, as Taffeta always says, when you take something rare and destroy  (some of) it, you make it even rarer and more important to preserve what remains.

I get that people can do what they want with their possessions, but like, why? They essentially just set fire to a pile of money.

Ok, so this is hard to post without beginning any kind of flame war BUT I feel I need to say it because it might be my post that triggered this discussion.

Loa, if you want to delete or edit any part of my post, feel free - I am not trying to cause any argument, just clarify.

There was a thread recently in which I compared decarding ponies to vandalising a rare pony such as a piggy pony. Obviously anyone who read the post would know that the comparison was hypothetical, to expose what is a double standard in the community (it's ok to vandalise some rare items but not others).

No proper collector would vandalise anything in their collection or in someone else's. That's the bottom line. I have heard of people cutting boy pony hair or whatever to make them more masculine and then later regretting it, but not as a malicious act.

Vandalising anything old now though affects price, rarity and such like in a way that it would not have done twenty or so years ago when G1 was plentiful. So it doesn't hurt to stop and think about preservation.

In any case, if my comparison is what led to this as a rumour, then you can lay it to rest. But the very fact that someone's reacting in outrage at the thought of it does kind of reaffirm that doublestandard :/

We should really be preserving everything in the state in which we find it where possible, and yeah, why would you vandalise something just to spite someone else?

@Teffeta ,  how dose one define "vandalising"   in this context?

if some one wanted to restore the hair or  try to fix other issues that come about as a result of age or improper storage
is that  vandalism ?    or are you referring to just  customising in general there.

not trying to provoke , just genuinely curious

doing some thing out of spite  or just to get a reaction is  one thing
but at the end of the day , a person can do whatever they like with something that they own.

your ponies or anything else  belong to you after all , not the community.

I wouldn't be fussed if someone did something idiotic.

Sounds like it didn't happen tho.

If you are unclear please read my post again.

So  anything other than  found condition  is "vandalism"???
Is that it? ..
Even if the found condition would continue to degrade over time.

It's pretty clear she means intentionally making a pony's condition worse, not better. Such as giving them a bad haircut, scribbling on them, etc, with malicious intent, not customizing or restoring.

Thank you. I didn't think I had been that obtuse.

As I mentioned I was clarifying a post made in a since deleted thread. I am not going to annoy the mods by debating the subject. I just wanted to make sure my hypothesis hadn't been taken out of context.

If still confused please read the start of my post again..very carefully.
