Cleaning ponies with batteries/mechanics

Hi all

First my disclaimer - I have very bad practical skills, particularly following instructions to complete complex practical tasks. So I would really appreciate simple solutions, if there are any, to this issue.

Today at the carbootsale I found some ponies. Two are battery operated. One is the Rainbow Dash that does amusing flips and the other is the Rarity with the light up diamonds. Rarity is more dirty than Dash but while I realise I can clean the bodies with wipes, I am worried what I can do about their hair. Rarity in particular has very bad hair and needs a shampoo, but I am not sure how to safely do this without shorting her electrics.

Any advice from experts?

Is there anyway to take out the battery?

Yes for Rarity at least. But I would do that...just worried about making them nonfunctional by exposing them to water ...

If the battery was out, and everything was 100% dried after being cleaned, it should be ok.

I wouldnt submerge the pony 100% in water. but dipping the hair in water (pony held upside down) should be ok.

Use a little spray bottle to mist if you are worried

Well, I usually like to wash out all pony hair properly if I can. I think since it's not hard to remove Rarity's battery (If I had a screwdriver here in London, I don't, but I can leave her till I go home and take her then) it will probably be ok to do her the way banditpony suggests. I did something similar to that to the Rainbow Rocks Pinkie Pie doll and managed to shampoo her without getting her battery compartment wet, because it was clear where it was and I kept her feet up the whole time.

More worried about Dash because I can't see how her battery is installed...and she has a lot more hair.

I had no idea when I bought her that she spoke or erm, flipped >.> and it's hugely amusing. So I really want her to keep being able to do that but with clean hair

I'd take a damp cloth with soap and wipe/scrub as needed.

To remove Dash's battery, you have to pry up the rubbery strip directly under her tail to find the screw underneath. 

The last time I had to wash the hair on one with a battery, I wrapped plastic around the base of the hair to help keep the water from dripping down into her and tried to keep the water only on the hair using as little as possible.

I will have to take them home with me because I don't have a screwdriver here in London, but that's a good idea, about the plastic. I will keep that in mind.

Firstly: Congrats on your interesting new ponies! 

Secondly all I would add is perhaps it might be an idea to try washing the mane and tail separately? While keeping said extremely Amusing Pony upside down at all times, even for drying. And using as little water as will get the job done. This will be tricky, this is true, but I think it will be safest. I don't think that it will be a good idea to get water inside Amusing Pony even if the batteries have been removed.

Well, the very best of good luck to you and please do share once you have been successful with your highly complicated spa day: I bet the ponies will be grateful.

Actually, that is a really good idea as it would be easier to isolate the sections of hair if I do it that way. I think I will adopt that. I'll have a mane spa day and a tail spa day It won't now be till I take them home but it's good to have an action plan. So remove batteries, wash mane and tail separately and wrap in plastic where possible to keep water out.

Hanging Amusing Pony upsidedown will doubtless only make her more amusing

Goodness knows what the people in the room below mine are thinking now, as I have no carpet on this floor...and she's quite loud. The funniest bit being that she completely failed the flip and landed on her side, then proudly announced "Perfect landing!". I would be so sad to do anything to lose her ability to do that
