Washing G1 Tinsel Hair is it a Bad Idea?
« on: March 29, 2018, 07:38:40 AM »
I was at an indoor swap meet last weekend and surprisingly found a few G1 ponies. I purchased the mail order Napper, as well as Princess Tiffany. Napper is I would dare to say is perfect, just the hair feels a little dirty (or dusty). Tiffany needs a bath and her hair needs combing and also feels dirty/dusty. I am considering washing the hair on both but I
have never washed G1 tinsel hair before so is this a good idea? Are there any potential risks to damaging the G1 tinsel, like is it more prone to discoloring/breaking/stretching than say G3 tinsel hair?

Your pony's hair will be fine with a good wash.

It's pretty much the same plastic as G3 tinsel.  Don't use boiling water on it, nor flat irons.  Especially the metallic tinsel.

I've had very good results with washing hair with tinsel in it, it never did any harm at all, and also with using a small, lower temperature straightening iron (the kind offered as a travel version) for straightening tinsel. It only works well if the tinsel is straightened one by one though. Just never ever apply heat to plastic tinsel. Colored tinsel might lose its color partially in the process though if it is very crincled. I once had that happen with a Princess Sunbeam. Princess Royal Blue was totally fine so I think it has not been colour related, just the fact that extreme crincling seems to harm the painted surface of the metallic tinsel at some point.

Heat is the main enemy of tinsel.  "Regular" hair washing is fine for G1 tinsel.

Just no boil perms or things like that.

Don't overheat or pull it, and tinsel is fine.  Washing won't harm it one bit.
You'll need to be very patient when combing out their hair, preferably do so while the conditioner is still in it.
