The mystery of this weird tail
« on: March 27, 2018, 07:34:16 PM »
Hello! I have come across something odd. I recently bought a big lot of ponies, and the seller threw in two bags of accessories. This included a few tails. The one I'm talking about is this:

Notice anything weird?

The top of the tail isn't there! Here is what a normal tail looks like. The clamp is in the middle of a hank of hair, so it comes out both sides.

With this tail, there is a thin shiny plastic film covering it. It's only coming out one side.

The clamp is also large and straight, unlike regular G1 clamps.

The length is also shorter than regular, but it could be cut, so... As for color, it doesn't match anyone I have, really. Here is a comparison pic.

There is Nibbles, Baby Lofty, Boysenberry Pie, and a loose Applejack tail that has way too much glue on it. The closest match is Boysenberry Pie, but her hair is still too yellow and saturated. The mystery tail is a tad more orange and a tiny bit less saturated.

My first thought was fakie. But nearly all fakies have rooted tails though? Is it another horse brand that isn't a fakie? It is a normal G1 tail? Am I overreacting and this is normal? I'm probably making a big deal out of this, but how G1s are made really interests me! Any thoughts? Thanks!

I'm gonna vote for a non-MLP. There are fakies with plugged tails. Princess Rinse 'n' Spit for example. I was curious and checked two of mine that still have their original tails and thy had a different type of clamp. :) Your extra tail looks super curly tho, maybe that could be a hint on what kind of pony it came from?

Thanks guys! It is curly, and a bit frizzy and matted. It doesn't feel cheep or oily and thin like fakie hair though. It has the amount of hair a normal G1 would have. The strands are the same thickness as G1 too. I'll have to look into nirvana tails too, but I doubt it :)

The lot I got it from was completely G1. No fakies. No other generations. And there was a lot of G1 things. There were also other loose tails, including a rainbow one for example. Nothing like this though

Thanks guys

Is there any chance it might belong to a Hasbro product (thus same hair) but not a pony? Something with a tail of hair from the head instead perhaps?

I know my Jem dolls have the same hair fibres as MLP do. Obviously this is not Jem (lol) but expanding your search across other Hasbro products from a similar era might be an option?

Could it come from a Fairy Tail bird?   I haven't seen how their tails are clamped.

Could it be one of the extra hair locks for the Trim n' Grow Dream Beauties? I can't tell from the pictures on the wiki what the ends look like, but that would be my guess. Having the hair arranged like that would be less confusing for kids than the normal, double-ended version, anyway.
My creativity keeps running into a lack of time and resources.
I'm also available via twitter at @Kazzellin :)

So many projects!! What do I want to work on? :awake:

The Trim 'n Grow Dream Beauty tails had a sort of plastic tube "clamp", not metal.  But that does look like real MLP / Hasbro hair to me . . . Maybe from some other Hasbro critter?

It is clamped almost exactly like a pony tail :)

This is bugging me, I feel I should know who this tail belongs too.

Thanks everyone! I have been doing some research now that I know where to start, and I have found some possible matches. It could be Little Sweets in the Little Pretty line or SunnySoft from the Lady Lovelylocks line. I'm leaning more towards Sunnysoft because Hasbro? What do you guys think? If only I could confirm what the tail clamps look like for them both... Thanks for the suggestions guys :D

Could it be a Dance 'n Prance tail?  The color looks pretty darn close to Tap Dancer:
http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/Tap_Dancer

The Dance 'n Prance ponies do have a plastic sleeve around the base of the tail, and they are shorter than normal.  I don't know what the internal mechanics for them look like, but I doubt they have the full tail hidden inside. It would make sense that the Dance 'n Prance tails are like half tails since they have to spin around. That tail even looks like it might have had a bit of curl to it at one time, just like Tap Dancer's.

The D&P ponies have a long plastic sleeve around their tail though, not just around the clamp part.   ...Actually I don't think they even have clamps!  What a mystery!

Yeah I considered it being a DnP, but there would have to be a sleeve after the clamp. Didn't know they don't have clamps!
