Help with a variant (??) Sparkly G1 Star Dancer
« on: March 12, 2018, 10:26:03 PM »
Well, I saw this one for sale and decided...what have I got to lose? All the other Sparkle Ponies look great but I have NO idea about this ginger-ale coloured Star Dancer? Has anyone ever seen anything like her before, is she a real true variant, or has her body faded over time? Her head is still sealed and I've done nothing to alter her appearance save clean some dirt off her and style her hair.

It's UV damage.  The translucent nature of the Sparkle Ponies makes them more prone to it, sadly.

Not every different coloured sparkle pony is suffering from discolouration, but I think this one probably is :/

I had one way back in the day (late 90s) where only part of her legs (the part that peeked out from behind the other pony she was in front of on my dorm room windowsill because I was an idiot and put my ponies right in a window) turned that color, so I am going to third the whole "faded" thing.

That being said, I kiiiiiiiinda like her better this way.

Yes it's discoloration - but it is pretty!

If you search around, this tends to happen to Star Dancer every so often

Found via google- (not my photos)

The soda pop color is MUCH nicer than the 50/50 transition color...

I like it. Definitely not the worst pony discoloration. I don't usually mind full body discoloration, anyway.

The Coca Cola look is discoloration, but at least it's pretty.  ;)

Thank you, Galactica and everyone else! I thought perhaps she might be a weirdo like the White Bluebelle or yellow Moondancer. She still has pretty nice blush, so I wonder if she was in direct sunlight to do this or if it crept up and through her body just by one part of it sitting in the sun? Anyway, I think she's nifty and since I love freaks of all kind she's definitely welcome here :)

You don't need direct exposure to get UV damage over time, so it's not unusual to find blush intact on an otherwise faded pony.  Different dyes, different materials react in different ways and at different rates.  There's a ridiculous amount of physics and chemistry in the whole process.  She's still a lovely pony though! :)

I'm not positive it's UV damage- I think that's just a theory.

It could be that she would have changed colors regardless, like the regrind ponies or the ponies whose glitter disolved

I have some vinyl dolls that turned yellow without the help of any light or UV whatsoever, so sometimes it's just the specific chemical mix (with conditioners, plasticisers, etc.) in any given batch of plastic...

I actually really love a number of the MLP color-changes, they can be quite pretty!

Galactica: I was wondering if maybe she was kind of the same as the White Windy or white Bluebelle. I've seen a couple on eBay now and they say it's the pony's inability to absorb the purple dye. Dunno if that's right, but her pony looked just like mine.

Neither the 'White Windy' nor 'White Bluebelle' are proper variants, they're faded, just like 'white haired Posey' or any other pony with formerly fading pink hair.  They were purple/blue at one point, but the dye has broken down - likely from UV exposure - just like this Star Dancer.  Damage does not a variant make, though they are interesting.

White Windy does not exist as such but there is a distinction between faded from purple and paler to begin with. The paler Windys are not white like Glory but are a uniform very pale colour and next to true lavender they look white.

My childhood Windy is very faded after 30+ years with me but in comparison to the paler Windy she too looks lavender. I did some comparisons on this a while back.

This is more batch than variant though. I just am not convinced by the catchall of fading as an explanation when minor batch dye diffrrences are as likely...especially where the colour is uniform. It gets used too often as an explanation for my liking. Especially for Sparkle Ponies, because sometimes different colour ones also show symbol differences, but people miss them because they assume fading.

This Stardancer seems discoloured to me.But it isn't a one size fits all situation and it was worth asking about :)

Well after owning Henry the Two Faced Pony I can say that it is very true that it is hard to know exactly what happened to cause this but aging plastic and maybe the dye used certainly did not hold up well did they?  I home that doesn't happen to mine even though people like the combination, I prefer her original pink color more.
