The Mane question is...(now w/ pic!)
« on: March 10, 2018, 04:13:57 PM »
I'm taking inventory of my collection, and I noticed something about two Parasols I have.

One has a mane that falls to the right, one has a mane that falls to the left.

Does this mean anything?  Or is it just normal variation?  I also noticed Manefallsright Parasol has a shorter tail.  It does not appear cut, and seems firm (i don't think it's been pushed inside her).  She is also a paler pink, but I attribute that difference in color to age/exposure.  Both are stamped Hong Kong.

Interesting ... I wouldn't say it's a variation. Perhaps something that happened at the factory. Could you post pics? I know i used to have to wet and train my shy pose manes to fall on the left. Default is almost always right / display side.

Sorry for the bad picture.  I'm using my deviant art to host my pictures, and deviantart doesn't like my cellphone, so I had to take a grainy picture with my Kindle.

Does it just fall like that, or are the plugs actually swapped?

The shorter plug line is on the left side of each.  Both ponies hair seems to naturally go in the direction they're in.  You can't tell because Manefallsleft's forelock is tucked behind her ear, but with Manefallsright you can see her forelock wants to fall right with the mane.

That's interesting, I would just assume some kid had a Pool Party and the hair dried on the opposite or something. The plugs tend to dictate which way the hair should fall.

So I know there are colour variations for Parasol and her whole set so it wouldn't surprise me to have hair rooting variations as well. I have to be honest, I have serious problems with understanding left and right and especially with a facing photo, so I'm not going to be able to comment on what other people have said, but I know that this phenomenon is not unique to your ponies. I would suggest batch is most likely. Is Parasol not also one of the ponies offered for Mail Order in the US or am I misremembering that?

Hrm, coincidentally, I just checked my image of my two Parasols (I tend to think of them as strawberry yoghurt and raspberry yoghurt xD) and it looks like Strawberry has her hair falling on the display side and raspberry on the other. But I don't have them to check so don't know if that's because I've pushed Strawberry's over that way. She's the one I've had the longest :/ You did mention, though, that yours were also different colours.

The MOC image of Parasol I have had loaned to me for my website shows it on the non display side on card (which is a UK card but that probably doesn't matter). The same contrast can be seen on my loose Sunlight and my MOC one
http://www.etherella.com/scrapbook2/sunlight.htm
Both pictured on this link. My loose Sunlight has a hair trim but you can see her hair naturally goes on the display side, whereas the MOC one is on the opposite. So I think it's probably normal and probably related to the batch. However I haven't gone looking at US MOC ones nor have I looked up mail order so you might want to do that.

I am not sure whether you consider it a variation with Parasol, but the way the hair falls can indicate a different version. Case study for this is Tutti Frutti and in her case it's not accidental or tampering, as it's been observed MIB as well.

Loose comparison

It's one of the ways you differentiate between the Tutti Frutti released in the UK and the one in continental Europe. You can tell it's deliberate because Tutti Frutti conveniently has a streak of colour as well, and this is rooted to lie on the top of the green mane in whichever direction the hair naturally falls:

Now if you know both of your Parasols definitely come from the US, then maybe it's batch or maybe the mail order thing is a possibility - as it might be sealed in bag differently from on card. BUT if you think one of them might have come from somewhere else, then it might be regional.

My childhood one fell to the left . . .

The hair falling to the right could be a result of some child's styling.  If it was 'supposed to' fall to the right then the plugs would be reversed IMO.

looking at the on card image on My Little Wiki, it shows the hair falls to the left (NDS)
My loose one is also like this. I don't have another one or two of this gal to compare sadly so I can't say more... However, you might investigate other ponies in this pose as they should have the same hairline.
