Mister Rogers Neighborhood turns 50
« on: March 04, 2018, 06:45:52 AM »
I still enjoy Mister Rogers Neighborhood and wish more PBS stations aired it regularly. It was fun seeing it back on the air every day this week but that was just for 50th anniversary celebration.  Here's a link to an episode on Youtube.

Is anyone else a fan of Mister Rogers?

When I was a kid, Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street were aired back to back. It was my favorite thing on TV.

Well, I have to admit that as a child I found the opening scene with him getting undressed and re-dressed through a song completely annoying.  I use to say to my mother, "there he goes again."  However, with that being said I loved the rest of the show.  Back in my day there was no way to hit a pause button or record it and then watch it later so you could avoid that annoying beginning. I have no idea why, but as a child that drove me insane.  I can't recall anyone ever saying they had that reaction.  I wish I knew why, but to this day I can't deal with it lol.  My favorite thing was when he would make crafts.

I loved Mr. Rogers, but did not enjoy the land of make believe. I'm not a fan of puppets, but absolutely love the guy. He's subtle in what he's attempting to teach. (Can't stand children's shows now a days... too much going on.)

Two beautiful stories about Mister Rogers.

The first is from a young man who met him during a hard point in his life when his grandpa had just died.  Even though he only saw Mister Rogers by chance, in an elevator, Mister Rogers saw he was upset and sat down to talk with him.

The second is from 1969 when Mr. Rogers testified in front of the senate to save funding for PBS.

Mr. Rogers was an extraordinary man, and I think what makes him especially inspiring is that any of us can aspire to be Fred Rogers.  He wasn't an Olympic athlete or save a baby carriage from going over a cliff.  He was just kind and caring.

I was kind of the same way.
As a kid, I ironically didn't care much for the more 'kid-friendly' Neighborhood of Make-Believe. I was always more interested in Picture Picture.
They: You're too old to watch that show!
Me: Can't hear ya, I'm asleep.

These made me cry. We will never have another man like Fred Rogers.

Here are a couple of more clips. One when Mr. Rogers was inducted in to the TV Hall of Fame and is surprised by a special guest, one of the children that appeared on his show. I love how happy Mister Rogers is when he see Jeff.

The 2nd one is Jeff talking about being on the show with Mister Rogers.

Yes, I seem to recall watching his show a bit when I was young. Notably, I think my favorite part would be the little trolley that came out at times.

Man, it’s still unbelievable that he’s gone.  While I don’t agree with his philosophy,  there was just something about him that was calming and refreshing.  I always loved when he’d feed his fish.  It was kinda neat learning that he would announce his fish feeding after a blind girl wrote him.  There are quite a lot of stories about what a good person he was.
