Yes totally!  I think I remember someone finding a mib Takara pony at a comic book store in the US.   She just asked if they had my little pony and the guy was like 'well I have one of Japanese ones...'  Think she paid $20 for it.   Then she posted on here asking if it was a real my little pony.   This was several years back.
