Dolly Mix Ponies?

Well I already made a post about an "unusual" way of obtaining G1s (HQG1C), so I might as well ask about these "candy box" ponies.

What do you think of these ponies? Do you have any pics? Are they still available?

I love them! I think they are super cute and have a small collection of them:

I'm pretty sure they stopped selling them in stores years ago, but you can still get them from other collectors. I think Clipper still has a good stock of them if you check out his store on Etsy (Clipper's Sail).

I love the dolly mix ponies! They were sold in the uk in Asda (supermarket) for £2 in 2010 ish? I remember getting mine around that time. There are 20 to collect in the tiny g1 series. They came in a bag with a small pack of dolly mix and a tiny comb (a smaller or recoloured g3 comb I think?) and a collectors guide, showing all the ponies in a style that’s a cross between g1 and g3. They were manufactured by the little factory, under license from Hasbro.

The core 7 was another set. They came in a box with a pack of sweets too. I believe it was around 2008 when they were out. I remember asking my parents for one of them but they said no :( I still wonder who was in that box I picked up lol. My mum surprised me with one one day, and then we bought another while shopping. I got snuzzle and gusty. I will add pics in a bit of them.

I have also managed to find 3 different hair colours for snuzzle, which I will show. I know there are a couple other variants too.

They haven't been in stores for a long time but people still tend to have them lurking around. I don't think I ever got a complete set when they were out but they are super cute, if a weird selection of characters (Mainsail?). I think they weren't exclusive to Asda, I am pretty sure they were out in several different stores around this time but mostly supermarkets if I remember rightly.

Wait, they're actually licensed? Cool! I'd only heard of them in passing. I have a similar lookin pony that came with some jelly beans but it's an obvious fakie.

I would love to collect more of them, but they were a UK thing.  I have a tiny little Powder only by luck of an Arena swap...

Not the best pic of them (I really need to take a better one sometime), but here's all of 'em:

(hmm, almost all of them, anyway. There's two versions of Glory - for some reason a lot of them were missing the horn - and earth!Glory isn't in this pic... huh. Wonder where I put her.)

They're long gone from UK shops (I got mine in late 2011/early 2012) but I imagine it wouldn't be *too* hard to find them for sale online.. since they were totally blind-packaged (no 'windows' or codes or any way of figuring out which one you were buying!) I'm guessing I'm not the only one who ended up with a hoard of extras ;) I really need to dig mine out sometime, that reminds me..

They're soooo cute  I love these little things, I wish they'd make another set :D

edit: ahah - found my old photos of the packaging, etc. Not the best but enough to give the idea, hopefully.

I should add - the original G3 Dollymix set was packaged differently, those came in a little rectangular box, but I don't have any photos of those (I do have one of the boxes hanging around, but it's pretty crushed ^^;) so idk maybe someone else has photos they can share of those ^^;;

they all came w/ this checklist (note to self: scan this or something someday, geez.)

aaaand here's what they came in! A little plastic baggie and a comb. (I don't have a photo of the dolly mixtures themselves. You're not missing much, they looked just like regular dolly mixtures but tasted pretty nasty :P)

...usually the ponies' heads were facing forwards and not doing an Exorcist impression, but this is the only clear photo I have of one still in the baggie they came in... :P

I've got one! The secondhand toy store I go to sometimes has a decent selection of them so I bought Shady a while back (think this was when that toy store was at a different location? So it was a couple years ago).

She hangs out with some other small G3 figures, since even though she's a G1 character, the style of the Dolly Mix ponies is much more like that of G3.

I suggest Ebay UK as the best potential source for people outside of the UK. Although I did notice that the HQG1C group are giving them away as freebies in the custom bundles in the US so that's another source ;)

I don't remember ever seeing the G3 ones here, but the others were here in the UK for a LONG time. But some were more common than others. I remember I had to get Shady from ladyG at ponycon because I hadn't managed to find her, but I had a few Heart Throbs.

I feel like they came with an insert that showed the images of all of them...?

And yes, they were licenced.

Whoops, looks like I edited my post at the same time you posted, Taffeta XP I added some pics of their packaging (and the insert!) to my earlier post.

I just noticed the bag refers to their symbols as "rump markings", makes sense since that seems to be what Hasbro called them, pre-"Cutie Mark" (ick).

It's fine, make me look like an idiot, I don't care...;)

I have to admit the only reason I don't have Princess Amethyst is because of that insert. I've boycotted every piece of merchandise featuring her in this country that uses that name. It offends me. :P But it is also why I remembered that the insert existed, because the ponies don't have any other name tag.

They were made in the UK, so that name should never have happened.

I still feel like it was a weird choice of ponies. Especially Mainsail.

I like that they chose seemingly random ponies, rather than the same old ponies that end up on all the retro merch. I also like that it has the g1 ponies drawn in g3 art style.

I have most of them available in my ecrater shop. I love dolly mix, and surprised at how many collectors don't have them!

I got some of them when they were new (from overseas) and the candy that came with them was terrible.  Just terrible.   The ponies themselves are cute.
