best fabric materials for DIY ponywear (G1 and HQG1C)
« on: January 29, 2018, 03:18:39 AM »
Apologies if this has been covered before......

Are there any fabrics or materials that stain or otherwise damage the vinyl of G1 ponies if used for ponywear over a few weeks?

Also are there any materials to be wary of with the glorious HQG1C models?
My Dasher has a little 'job' over the next few weeks - he's going to be a mascot for Wales in the Six Nations rugby tournament. I've made him a red rug out of cotton jersey (with welsh dragons natch!) and because red dye can be notorious for staining have lined it with white cotton. Is cotton OK on the vinyl. Dasher was obviously bought new and would not want to damage him.

Thanks

I'm no expert but any fabric w/o dye should be fine. Dye is what does damage. I have a G1 displayed right up against a g4 plush (dr Whooves) and it left brown stains on the g1.

set dye in fabrics using a vinegar soak. just toss the thing in plain vinegar and thoroughly rinse after 8 hours.  beware of color bleed during this process if the fabric/s are multi-colored (like red and white stripes)

You know, I could totally see Dasher in that job. His colour scheme is just perfect. He just needs a little red dragon to accompany him and he's sorted.

Absolutely!!
What a good idea re the dragon - actually we've got one that's really a Christmas tree ornament..............
I thought that I liked Dasher because he looks like a multi-coloured version of our Fell pony - but there could have been a subliminal nation thing going on too as I'm Welsh :) .

For the Six Nations he's got Welsh dragons on either side of his little rug and red, white and green ribbons in his tail instead of his yellow one.

Let's hope he has the right effect on the team :)

I'm English but have some Welsh ancestry and I live close enoiugh to the border when home that most of our trains go to Wales, people graffiti our roads with 'Araf' instead of 'slow' and we regularly see Ambwlans, Heddlu and Post Brenhinol vans circulating around. I also think the welsh flag is much more interesting :) It would be so cute for Dasher to have a little dragon mascot :D

Not denim fabric, they dye will rub or leach on to your pony :(

I tend to use poly-cotton fabrics for making doll or pony clothes and I always pre-wash the fabrics before using them. I always pre-wash any ribbons or lace too.

Thanks

Most of my crafting fabrics are recycled or vintage so they always get washed carefully before use (found that out the hard way when I trimmed a dress with vintage lace and had a lovely tidemark on my wrists!!). I've plenty of white polycotton and cotton so I'll line doubtful fabrics in that before putting on ponies.

Thanks for the tip about denim PKW

PS PKW, just noticed your location - another Babylon 5 fan perhaps? Hubby and I are enjoying the re-run on Pick channel at the moment.

I still need to watch the finale for Babylon 5. I lost track of it during season 5 but heard I can just skip to the end from there.

I've had the same thing happen with trims :( I've also had things shrink because I didn't prewash them. It's pretty soul destroying after you've spent ages making something.

Haha yes, B5 :) I've been on Z'ha'dum for 2.5 years now
