G1 release year confusion
« on: January 21, 2018, 03:13:08 PM »
I started logging the year imprinted on the hoof of my ponies into my collection spread sheet and I've noticed some inconsistencies from when I thought certain ponies were released.

For example, my Mainsale, Merriweather & Dancing Butterflies all have '84 stamped on their foot but I thought those ponies were released sometime between 1986-1988?
And my Love Token & Good Weather both say '87 when I thought they were '91?

Is there any logic to this?

Ponies are stamped by the year that mould was first used. It has nothing to do with their release year unless they are the first pony in that pose.

Of course, in case of ponies like Up Up and Away, it also depends on the region. She's one of the first in that pose, her pose is dated 1987 and her US release is 1987. In Europe she's released in 1988, but she still has 1987 on her hooves.

So yeah. Date is the date of the mould, not the date of the pony release, unless they are the first to use that pose. Actual release date could be much later, and depends on the region of release.

Taffeta posted it before I did. :) :) All of the ponies in the same mold will have the same date  stamped on their hooves.  G1 Applejack, G1 Bowtie and G1 Sundance all have 83 on their hooves.

Sorry Ponyfan ;) but I guess it doesn't hurt to have more examples?? ;)

There are some which have modified moulds (like the Sundae Best moulds are based on poses from 1983 but they're produced in what, 1988?) I am actually not sure what year they have. It should be the year of their release because of the modified pose but I genuinely don't know. Either way, you sometimes have those anomalies as well. :)

Edit to add - worth remembering Applejack and Bow Tie have two pose options ;)

I just checked my Sundae Best Sherbet and she had 87 on her hoof. :)

You’re right Taffeta. :) I forgot about the CP Applejack and Bowtie  I only have the Shy Pose Applejack and Bowtie and they were in easy reach while I was making the post.  :)
