Sun fading question PICS ADDED!!!
« on: December 30, 2017, 12:23:54 PM »
I have a quackers that needs her body sun faded and I’m not sure if I need to cover her hair or not. Are there certain hair colors that fade in sun or are they all probe to fading? I hate to ask here for every pony that needs something sunfaded so If anyone has some suggestions or pointers for this I’d appreciate it.  :)

Also I know the light pinks for sure fade....

Ok I decided to take some pics of Quackers to see if you guys think she's savable. Looks like something pink rubbed off on her face and legs along with some other non removable marks. She came in a lot this way.

Always cover the hair...

I can't remember if Quackers is one of the white ponies who sunburns though...

Yes, always cover hair (not with aluminum foil) and markings (symbol, eyes,...) with white paint (water or alcohol soluble). Some hair fades quickly indeed, there's a shade of pink who is really prone to that. It will go white.

You might want to test if she burns or not. I can't remember if she burns but I think some do and some don't, so you could maybe just expose the bottom of one of her hooves to the sun for a while to see if it burns?

On to the hair, you should always cover hair and paint on a pony. There is only one shade of hair that always fades to white though, which is fading pink. Quackers doesn't have that shade though, so her hair should be safe in the sun, but you should still cover her hair :)

You're welcome. =)
I couldn't find a sunburned pony pic over the internet, but there was a case about G1 Gingerbread who well.. got a gingerbread color instead of her white coat because of sun exposure. Gingerbread is really prone to sunburns.

Never cover a fading pony with foil. It can stain their bodies and their hair. You can use paper towels instead :)

Hmm I’m using tin foil right now on a pony I’m sunfading. Maybe I should switch it out. I still think it’s crazy a pony can sunburn.  Think I still may give my quackers a try. She has so many marks that me might be considered baity if I can’t fade them off.

I've never had any trouble with using foil... but I do see the value in using paper towels.

I've never had any problems with foil either, and I've had ponies sunfading in it for months (or in one case years!).  Considering the problems I've had with fading right through other methods I've tried (white paint, painter's tape) I would be very cautious about trusting paper towels to completely block the sun for any extended length of time.

I wonder if parchment-foil would be safe?

Here in the UK they sell it in the baking section of the supermarket.

It is a roll of foil lined with baking paper - I guess the paper would be a neutral barrier to the pony body while the metal part does the job of sun blocking?

I’ve never done anything like that because we don’t get enough sun 3/4 of the year. But I urge you to follow the advice of those who have gone before you. They are wiser and made terrible mistakes so you could succeed. Now go out there and be safe and follow the directions!

I'm fairly certain Quackers sunburns - she's got the milky white plastic that often goes cream all on its own that is typical for prone ponies.
I also wouldn't trust paper towel to block UV.  Ultraviolet is no joke, and I've never heard of anyone complaining about aluminum foil causing stains.  What kind of stains exactly, are there any photos of this?  Aluminum oxidizes clear, unlike iron which rusts.
