Christmas music
« on: December 19, 2017, 11:34:33 AM »
While I can get worn out from too much Christmas music, I think I found out why. It was because we only own a handful of Christmas CDs and it gets repetitious listening to the exact same pieces sung by the exact same artists over and over again. But if I listen to it from the radio, I get a wider variety and I don't get as worn out.

I do love me some Christmas music, though, especially the religious ones. :holiday:

Not my first choice for background music even within the week of Christmas, but it's nice to drive to or to pass the time at work.

I love it Christmas Eve and Christmas at home with family and friends.   But I get pretty annoyed at it in stores or on the radio.

It starts November 1st and it does not stop until the holiday season ends. There are some pieces of holiday music that I actually keep in rotation on my playlists year round.

It's a no from me!

I never did used to mind it, but I worked for almost 15 years in retail, the same Christmas songs for 8 hours a day from the beginning of November until Christmas Eve put me off.

You do grow "deaf"/learn to tune out to music after a while.

Some Christmas music I really like, while others are just irritating.

Typically for me, the most irritating Christmas songs are the non-Christian ones. It may come off as strange because I'm nonreligious. However, I don't really think it's because they're religious persay, and it's just a general statement anyway. The newer religious ones like "Mary Did You Know?" are not really to my liking, either. While there are plenty of secular ones like "I'll Be Home For Christmas" that I find to be pleasant.

I like the old Christian Christmas carols because they oftentimes have melodies and harmony (like they're modal instead of tonal) that go waayyyy back and I am a fan of Early Music. Take O Come, O Come Emmanuel - my top favorite Christmas song - the music that it was applied to is came from the middle ages. Even ones that are slightly more recent in melody/harmony have such gorgeous melodies. They are so different from anything modern.

I'm weird, I know. Even weirder as a worker in retail for a four year time period, I actually appreciated when Christmas time came around and they were forced to change the music to something different for a month or so. While quite a few Christmas songs are irritating to me (and some of the versions they chose were pretty atrocious, too), it sure beats the rest of the year where pretty much everything they play is irritating to me.

The same thirty songs remixed by three thousand different artists?  No thank you.

The few (I can count them on one hand) Christmas songs I like stay on my playlist all year long:

Last Christmas (Wham!)
Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (John Lennon)
All Alone On Christmas (Darlene Love)

And a song that's not really a Christmas song but gets played at this time of year specifically because it mentions Christmas Eve & New Year's in the lyrics:

Same Old Lang Syne (Dan Fogelberg)

Likewise with the Peanuts theme (Linus and Lucy by the Vince Guaraldi Trio) which gets played due to the popularity of the Christmas special, though it should be noted this song was never exclusive to the Christmas special.
Rainbow Dash always dresses in style.

I dislike it when the music starts before December 1. And I won’t actively seek out Christmas songs myself. But if one comes on, I’m happy to listen. Great for boosting the spirit. So long as it’s not too loud or one of those breathy covers. Really starting to get tired of all theses guys who can’t sing.

I read recently that research has showed that forcing people to listen to the same christmassongs over and over is equal to torture. So it doesn't just feel like torture, it is for us poor retailworkers :P.

I am however lucky enough to be able to choose the christmas songs I want to listen to so we're not doomed to have a list of the same ten songs in a loop.. So I am forced to play christmas songs but has every playlist on Spotify available and has tried to teach customers and coworkers some different types of it.

I am therefor not tired of it yet :). I love that I get to hear my favorite singers sing of christmas at work as well as at home. Not in a bit religious, (christmas is still called julafton (from yule) in Sweden) but I love Tarjas take on O come o come Emmanuel. Don't have to be religious to appreciate good music.
