How to remove a G2 pony head ?
« on: December 12, 2017, 10:33:37 AM »
Hi everyone !

I love G2s and I would like to be able to restore them like my G1 and 3, but they are different. I would like to gather a maximum of tips to take care of them correctly. For example : how can I remove their head properly  ? How is the mechanism in the Magic Motion set ? Do they suffer from tail rust too ? Have you already tried to rehair some of them ?
Maybe it's just me, but there is not very much documentation about G2, isn't it ? Well, thank you very much for you answers.
Have a nice day ! =)

Ditto means the same ^.^

I've only taken apart a regular G2, with no mechanism inside. She had tail rust inside and needed cleaning out. I used a hair dryer to warm her up so I could easily remove her head. I used the hair dryer again to get her head back on.

I've rehaired G2's using the "tool"method. The plastic is harder so you have to be careful of breaking the rehairing needle/tool.

I've never taken apart a G2 with a ball joint neck so I'm not sure about those.  The 'regular' G2s have the same style of neck as G1 ponies (held in with a plastic lip) but their plastic is so much harder that it's more difficult to get the heads off / on.  The hairdryer sounds like a good idea!

I've taken a G2 apart and rehaired it.  It has the same joint as a G1 pony.  However, it is a harder plastic and typically takes more force to pop off. I used my hands.  They are not fragile.   They don't have any glue holding the head on.  Once it is off the space is very tight.  It takes pliers and a thin small needle to rehair.  I don't know about the mechanism ones though.

I have once taken apart a magic motion pony in very very bad condition, for science (and art) with the mechanism that when you push the tail in she bucks her head. I'd say stay away from trying to get into those ponies. They have, from the ball joint in their neck, a plastic rod type thing that goes to the tail hole, from which the tail sticks out. I don't know how it's fastened in the rod either. I also couldn't get the head off the ball joint (you'd probably have to break the pony to do so). So do be careful with those ponies, You'll probably end up doing more damage than repair :/

But like the others said, a regular g2 pony has the same kind of head joint as a g1. I second using a hairdryer or dipping her in hot water. I have also rerooted, I'd suggest tool. I like using a thumbtack to make the holes a liiittle bit bigger before I shove the tool through, especially with ponies with harder plastic such as g2s. The plastic will close right back up after you've pulled the tool out again :)

Wow, thank you so much for all your answers, they are really useful. My Magic Motion pony is the one who rotates its hoof when we turn its head. I'm glad this one is fine. Hopefully I won't have to pop too many G2 heads off/ So far so good. I've never seen a G2 in horrible condition except one with is hair trimmed off. Poor Momy Bonheur, I will definitely need to rehair her. Do you know her hair colors ? It's some sort of pink and yellow, but I am looking for the closest match possible.

Have a nice day. =)

Butterfly looks really good, but isn't Watermelon Martini a teeny tiny bit too red ? Maybe it's my eyes. I don't have my pony right Now, I'll have a look at her this weekend. =) Thank you so much for your research, it is really great. I can't wait to have a salary to buy my hair.

I've never seen mommy bonheur in person, and I only have a Heartthrob  hank at home when it comes to dark pinks, and I can say heartthrob looks too cool in colour. Watermelon might be too red, indeed. have a look around the pink section of the page I linked, there are several really similar colours, so it was hard to compare, especially without holding the actual pony  xD glad if I could be of help tho :D
