Irish Music!

Any people here who are into Irish music? :D visitors can't see pics , please register or login

I just love Irish music. Of course I am biased as heck, but you can't deny that Irish music is amazing. There's just something incredibly pure and real about it. So what do you like most? Pub songs? Traditional songs? Celtic rock? The more ethereal side?

I personally enjoy it all. My favourite artists include The Cranberries, Sinéad O'Connor, Christy Moore and Luka Bloom. Some specific tracks from other artists I love are The Rocky Road To Dublin (Irish Folk Players), The Poem Of The Lonesome Boatman (The Fureys & Davey Arthur), Athair Ar Neamh (Enya), Marcshlua Uí Néill/O'Neill's March (Seán Ó Riada/The Chieftains) and  A Chomaraigh Aoibhinn O (Karan Casey), but to be honest the list goes on and on!

Oh, and of course Irish Pub Radio!

So what about you? visitors can't see pics , please register or login

this is really funny because for the past month or so i have been really into old irish/scottish drinking songs! just thrown into my usual music listening. My favorites right now are rocky road to dublin (as well) (by the dubliners) and the drunk scotsman (by bryan bowers). i like several others too but i keep going back to those two.

Awesome! :D The Dubliners are great too, but I like the version of The Irish Folk Players more because there's so much fire in it. The Chieftains did a nice version too, especially the instrumental parts, but it irks me that it's with The Stones (they even put in a short bit of I Can't Get No Satisfaction, please make it go away!). I really hate The Stones. XD

Most of my favorites are Irish!  Enya, The Cranberries & Dolores on her own, Sinead O'Connor... Oh, except Sinead changed her name recently.  She's Magda Davitt now.

Back in the late 90s a bunch of us flew over for a long weekend in Dublin. We stayed at the Temple Bar youth hostel for our accommodation - which was right next door to the famous Temple Bar pub!

One evening (after doing the Guinness factory tour etc) we went in for drinkies and all of a sudden the "locals" got out their drums and started a traditional jam - it was so cool!

I prefer listening to it live as you get that lovely atmosphere where everyone taps their toes - I'm normally into indie rock / alternative otherwise!

Some of my favorite music. Pub songs, folk songs, rock, new age, you name it.

Do Riverdance and Loreena McKennitt count?  I don't think that they're very traditional Irish music, but there's still something in the sound that's so pretty and unique.

I like Irish folk music! I play Norwegian folk music, but every time I learn something especially cool, my teacher tells me it sounds Irish. I guess that influence comes from the vikings.

I listen to a lot of British Folk Music, however, I've never really looked into exactly where these songs originate from unless I was just really taken back by them. From a little research this morning, it looks like pretty much all of it is either English or Scottish.

However, there is oddly enough one song from an 80s group that I like that is doing a tune of Irish origin.

Molly Bond by Oysterband

Despite being from the 80s they give the song a sound that is reminiscent of early Steeleye Span, which I love. But that's off-topic, sorry.

Awesome to see that so many people enjoy Irish music! :D And I didn't know Sinéad changed her name, remarkable!

YES! We have a Celtic playlist (of 14 hours, and still growing XD ), and there are 22 Loreena McKennitt songs in it. :D You're absolutely right, her music is just magical. And, as far as I'm concerned, Irish at heart.

(She is of Irish descent by the way, if Wikipedia isn't lying to me!)

I dont go out of my way to listen to it persay..I like it but prefer other types of music..but I like the atmosphere it creates, if we have friends over, few drinks and someone will always break out the bodhrán!

We used to live just next to where Enya grew up, in Gweedore, Co Donegal :)

I grew up on that flavour of music, my Grandfather came to NZ from Ireland when he was in his early 20's and man that guy loved to sing!! I have a really weird question, when he started getting dementia he used to sing about "Aunty Mary had a canary up the leg of her drawers" does anyone know what that is from?

Auntie Mary
had a canary
up the leg of her drawers
when she farted
down it darted
like a racing horse

Bonkers stuff!
